Upstate NY Babies

::Telyco::

You seem to know a LOT about cameras and photography so I was wondering if you would let me know your opinion on a specific camera. Like I've mentioned- I'm just looking for something to take shots of the kids/family that are better than my canon powershot. A camera to learn on that will last me at least a few years. I don't need video- we love our video camera.

What do you think of the canon rebel xs?

Re: ::Telyco::

  • we have the original canon rebel dslr and love it. We got it a month after it came out so the megapixels isn't very high at all.  One of these days i am going to read the instructions

  • I did lots of research before I chose mine - and ended up with Nikon just because I read numerous places that the kit lenses for Nikon were better. I also liked the way it fit in my hands better. So I can't really say for sure about that Canon model but just from what I know...I think you would be perfectly happy with it. But you may want to consider getting a better lens for it. Canon has a "thrifty fifty" which is a 50mm prime lens for around $100. That would be good for portraits of the kids - but may be a little tight indoors. You may want to swing by Best Buy (you know, in your spare time) just to hold both cameras and take some pics with them and see if the controls of one brand seem like a better fit.

    Also...budget wise, you may want to think about looking at used/refurbished too. I've read that some people actually prefer refurbished to new because instead of just plopping off an assembly line, a refurbished lens is meticulously looked at before returning to the market.

    Adorama and B&H are highly recommended sites for cameras - especially used/refurbished. (only go through those for used - not amazon or anything like that. Unless one of those sites are selling through Amazon, which they sometimes do)

    I think I would recommend this, though:

    A refurbished Nikon D3000 - newer technology and while that Canon would be totally fine - it's just older. And from what I have read the Nikon kit lens is a little better.

    Equipment wise I also think either a speedlite or a lightscoop is a total necessity for nice photos. You could have a $5000 camera but if you are flashing into a face, all the detail gets lost and you might at well be using your camera phone. The lightscoop is a lot cheaper. https://www.amazon.com/Professor-Lightscoop-Standard-Universal-American/dp/B0017LNHY2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314243646&sr=8-1

    For Nikon I started with the SB-400 speedlight - it has its limitations but it's fine for the $. It would make a great Xmas gift ;)

    And as any wannabe photographer will tell you - it's ALL about learning to use your camera in anything other than Auto Mode...because if you are shooting in auto you are just using a very expensive point & shoot. This is a great book for the basics: https://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Exposure-3rd-Photographs-Camera/dp/0817439390/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1314244149&sr=1-1

    I can lend you my copy if you'd like (or anyone else that's interested) you know, for reading in your spare time...haha!!

    If you have any more questions...feel free to ask away!! I luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrve photography :)
