If you know when you ovulated people usually say you can test at 10 dpo. I got a bfp at 9dpo with afternoon urine, so presumably some people can test earlier.
I got a very faint positive @ 12 dpo. Which was the day before my period should have be due.

We used a FirstResponse Sunday (6 days before my period is supposed to start), and it came up positive. We did it again today (2 days before period), and the pink line was darker this time. I don't know when ovulation was, but the first day of LMP was July 29th. We couldn't wait to start testing either.
I didn't POAS until 10DPO, which was 5 days before expected period. I used a cheapy brand, Answer. I saw a faint line so later in the day I used another cheap brand, CVS Digital and pregnant popped up. Of course I PedOAS again the next day and again today lol. It is kind of neat seeing the line get darker and darker.
Honestly I don't exactly know since I kind of guessed when my O date was without an opk. If I go by the times I know things "happened" so to speak, we would be talking 13-14 DPO (minimum). I waited until the day I was supposed to start AF to POAS.

I really don't know how many days before my missed period. I had only been off BCP one month and have no idea how long my LP is. I know I ovulated on CD23, and got a very clear BFP @ 11DPO. So, before I missed my period, but anywhere from 2+ days...
Edit to add: Im all honesty if we ever go on to have #2, I won't test before AF is due. Those were the most stressful days of this pregnancy... Something like 70% of miscarriages are CP and AF comes on schedule. In that case, I would rather not know.
If you don't know exactly when you ovulated, I think it's a good idea to wait until your period is actually late (or later than when you think you should be getting it) before you test.
If it still manages to be a - at that point, it's likely that you just ovulated later than normal, so you should keep testing until you get a +, your period comes, or you reach 60 days in your cycle. (At which point you could call your doctor.)
I wasn't charting, but my periods are pretty regular (the 16th of every month is when I typically started). I POAS on the day I was due because I didn't have any cramping at all and the test was positive.

I got a very clear positive 2 days before my missed period. I probably could've gotten a positive result sooner because I tested at 1pm and it was considerably dark.

I think the general consensus is FREP with FMU.
