Dogs and carseats

I've been thinking of taking my poor dogs to the dog park but I'm nervous about putting them in the backseat with the baby. They're too big to go in the front seat (plus the little one tries to get in my lap while driving). Has anyone else tried this (dogs in back with baby?)? How did it go?

eta- dogs have shown no signs of aggression towards LO- just worried about them jumping around.

Re: Dogs and carseats

  • I don't have a dog YET, but I was talking about this exact issue with DH the other day. We would get a labrador retriever, but I am concerned about traveling with both of them. A big dog in the back seat with an infant scares me!

  • We have done it with a big dog (see siggy). She loves our baby and is very gentle with him although she is high energy. The first time she rode in the back with him she jumped over his seat to the other side and she was given a very stern "NO" and has not done it since and we have driven many times since then with her. We keep a cover over him and his seat while she is riding with him though so he doesn't get licked or drooled on.

  • I've done it with my mom's medium-sized dog.  He was fine except I think once he stepped on the seat belt that was holding the carseat in and unbuckled it.

  • Our weenie dog rides IN the seat with DS. She curls up at his feet. Never had any problems with her being aggressive with him. She likes to lick his toes and he kicks at her and laughs.

  • I have had my 70lb golden in the backseat with DS several times. He is always fine. I put down the window on the opposite side of the car from the carseat and he just sticks his head out that side, but most of the time he sits in the middle and sticks his head on the console and looks out the front window. He pays no attention to the carseat or the baby at all. Have you tried putting the carseat in the car without LO in it and seeing what the dogs do on a ride with it?

  • We have two Jack Russells and we bought them "seat belts".  They are basically REALLY short leashes and that you slide onto the seat belt and then you hook the seat belt.  It has a clip on the other end and clips to the dog's harness.  The dogs can move and sit up or lay down but they can't run all over the car!

  • We've done 3+ hour roadtrips with dog and baby in the backseat.  Our dog is about 15 lbs and usually alternates between the front and back seats.  We have an SUV so we usually just lay 1/2 the backseat down (obviously the portion without the carseat) so he can look out the window.  We've never had a problem with the dog trying to climb onto the baby.

  • We have an SUV - so we put the very back seat down flat and bought a car barrier to put between the 2nd and 3rd row of seats. We drove with the LO and 2 dogs on an 18 hour car trip and everyone was just fine. LO spent the drive staring at the dogs and chatting away.

  • We have a 60lb lab retriever and take her everywhere with us.  She doesn't even go near the carseat.  Sits on her side staring out the window or just lays down.  She is also a bit scared of the baby. lol
