Success after IF

Birth control?!

I have my 6 week appointment on the 30th and DH and I have been trying to figure out if we even want to bother with BC. Before Foster we always said that he would NEVER use it again because clearly it was a waste of money considering both of our issues.

I have PCOS w/IR among other issues and DH has 3% morph and low motility.

I think the chances of us getting pregnant on our own is like zilch. I plan on asking my OB what she thinks too. We plan to try for another baby and we still have 3 frozen blasts at my REs office. I am in grad school and we said that we would wait till I finished and then go back and do an FET or 2.

Truth be told I miss being pregnant and waiting almost 2 years seems like longer than I really want to wait. Should I just say forget it to BC and see if it happens between now and then?! I am so torn. What would you do?

Re: Birth control?!

  • I didn't go on BCP's after the girls and here I am gearing up for IVF for #3.

    I also have PCOS

  • If you have ovaries, tubes and a ute and DH has sperm - there is a chance. Even my DOCTOR laughed when she asked about BC and I reminded her about our IF and use of donor eggs.

And lo and behold, just a couple months after my cycle returned I got pregnant. If you don't want to get pregnant right away, use BC.  There has been an "outbreak" of surprise BFPs here - make no mistake that in many cases, something happens after pg that temporarily modified IF.

If, on the other hand, you are open to another pg, then don't use it. But that's really something for you and DH to decide.  anyway, at this point I would operate as though you are fertile.  Seems crazy, but you just never know.

  • I did not go on BCP after DS was born and he will be 3 next month.  We are heading back to the RE Sept 6th.  Good luck!

  • I know it's a pain, but I personally would only forego the BC if you are 100% ok w/getting pg again now.  Otherwise, it is wise to use something, regardless of your/DH's dx, as you know there are plenty of ppl here and elsewhere who get surprise BFPs after SAIF who think they have 0% of conceiving on their own.

DH and I will be using BC after the LO's arrive as we will be done, but if we weren't, we would until we were ready to TTC again.  We didn't leave these things to chance before and we have no plans to now.

I think it depends on whether you'd rather TTC again on your own or have a preference for using your FE, timing, $, what would happen w/school if you got pg again, etc., etc...

    GL deciding.

  • we chose not to do anything hormonal...many people choose to use condoms or go with an IUD if they don't want to "mess" with their hormones.  We aren't doing anything to prevent besides occasionally pulling out... but we would be ok with an un-tried for bfp.  You might want to examine your thoughts about your frosties too...I know a few people on here have chosen to prevent so that they could use up their frosties first...its all a very personal, tough decision!  Good luck!! :)
  • I have mine coming up to and I'm like you, on the fence about birth control. We tried for over a year and a half on our own and nothing happened. We do want another one and I dont have any frosties as we only did IUIs.

I also dont have any issues so its not like this pregnancy is going to jump start anything. My DH has a low count so I have thought about seeing if its still low and if it is then not using any form of BC. Or maybe I'll just go on the mini pill since I'm EBF. I just dont know...

  • We didn't use BC after our son. Our chances were pretty much zilch, I didn't want anything hormonal and we figured that even though ideally we wanted kids 3+ years apart, if it happened, great, we saved the stress/cost of another IVF cycle. It happened and our LOs are almost exactly 2 years apart and I wouldn't change a thing.

  • personally I thought it was useless but I would have been happy with a surprise. There have been a lot of women on here who have gotten surprises lately so if you want to prevent, I'd consider BCP of some sort.
