"Newbie" and a yeast question

Hi! I used to hang out on this board a little big, but with my rough baby-making year, I've gotten a little gun-shy about the bump. I normally hang out on the Crafts board on the nest (and I see several of you here! Hi!).

Anyway, I had a revelation last night that the cause of DD's semi-constant diaper rash is yeast. :/ After getting past the horrible mom feelings, I'm now trying to figure out what to do about it. I read about treating the diapers with bleach, grape seed oil, and tea tree oil. I'm scared of bleaching my FBs and Blueberries, will it fade the colors? Will tea tree oil really get it all out?

Thanks for any advice/suggestions!

  • I vote bleach. I don't mess around with yeast. I know it's not EF, but it works. I bleached, then sunned everything. I didn't have any fading.

  • You can do hot (like, pour a pot of boiling water into your washer as it fills) wash with bleach, then put TTO in after that.  Just so you know, I'd do lots of rinses; my super sensitive DS got a pretty nasty rash after I used TTO on his dipes.

I'd put apple cider vinegar in her bath water, and soak your bras/underwear in white vinegar (DH's underwear and your bed sheets if you bedshare, yeast can be jock itch for guys or athlete's foot) to get rid of cross-contamination.

Gentian violet also helps, even though it's messy and stains.  No joke; the bottle says not to use it on deep cuts because you'll end up with a tattoo.  When I used it I put it on my nipples with a q-tip and then nursed DS so it coated the inside of his mouth.  It looked like he ate a sharpie for a few days, but it did work and that was the least-messy method.  I just wore a black bra when I used it, but you can cut up some fleece or something to create a nursing pad so you don't stain your clothes.  If you aren't nursing you can just paint her mouth with a q-tip.

Another option that I've never done because I would rather fight it in other ways is to cut out all sugar and starch from her diet; basically no white foods (sugar, rice, potatoes, white bread, etc.)  That essentially cuts off yeast's food supply and helps it go away faster.  A probiotic, if she isn't taking one already, can also help keep it at bay.  For the past few weeks we've been giving DS probiotic powder in a fruit/veggie smoothie every day and his digestion has been better, and no yeast!  That's a big deal for us because yeast/thrush has been a constant struggle for us, coming and going since he was about 5 months old.

Good luck! As I said, we've had a hard time with yeast and I've tried pretty much every solution in the book.

  • Wow, thank you SO much ladies! This really helped a lot. I'll do the bleach/TTO tomorrow so that I have full sun in the afternoon to line dry them, and I will do the bathwater thing too. We put TTO and lavender EO in our wipes solution and it seems to help her there, so I will keep that up.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for being so informative, BFab!!

  • No problem, glad I could help!  I know how frustrating yeast can be, and it's such a PITA to get rid of 100%
