Hi all,
I have my first appointment next week, but until then I was wondering, besides water, what is considered "ok" to drink? It seems like no matter what the beverage, there is a difference of opinion out there. I guess it's everything in moderation, but besides alcohol, is there anything you absolutely avoid? I've been drinking a fair amount of orange juice, and also crystal light (until I read it wasn't good). I'm just getting kind of sick of water ALL the time....
Thanks!
Sarah
Re: what else can we drink?!
I am right there with you. I completely stopped all caffeine so no more coffee in the mornings.
When I get sick of water I add a splash of sugarfree cranberry juice or a wedge of freshly cut lemon.
I try to stay away from any kind of juice becasue of all the sugar.
Hey Sarah!
Ginger ale is key when I have an upset stomach.
I avoid soda like the plague because it gives me wikkid heartburn. I drank too much soda before I got pregnant and now I might never drink it again, I quit cold turkey - it sucked a little bit but the heartburn was awful.
You can drink fruit juices - apple is my favorite. I can't have oj, the acid upsets my stomach. Cranberry juice, or those V8 Fusion drinks are good too!
I'm with you - I HATE plain water! I drank gallons of Crystal Light before I found out, but now I'm cutting out aspartame.
I've been doing mostly water w/ lots of fresh lime or lemon in it and 1 Splenda or a little real sugar.
I also got the diet cranberry juice (which has Splenda in it too), and I drink that diluted w/ water and a squeeze of lime.
ETA: I forgot - I've also been making decaf iced tea at home.
I've only given up booze. And I hate artificial sweeteners anyway.
So I drink tons of coffee, iced tea, ginger ale, and the occasional Pepsi or San Pellegrino Limonata or Aranciata.
Have you tried watering down the juice? I usually fill 1/4 of a cup with juice, and the rest with water, and it still tastes good.
Actually, not everyone agrees with you on that.
Some sources say it's fine in moderation. Others say it's fine after the first trimester.
I have a giant pitcher of decaf tea at home at all times. I do drink half caff in the morning (if I don't, I don't poop, and poop is just too important to me).
I drink mostly water throughout the day, but do have a diet root beer on occasion when I am craving pop. I never drank pink (saccharin) artificial sweetner, (have been told that is a no no), but I do still use Splenda and drink things with the blue stuff (aspartame).
The only juice Ive been drinking is prune, again for the poop thing.
I always thought if you avoided drinking within a few hours of taking your prenatal vitamin it was ok (in moderation, as with anything). I believe the risk is that it can interfere with folic acid absorbtion.
REALLY? I miss Crystal Light, since I gave up diet stuff. What is in this Pure drink you speak of?

ETA: Sorry! Don't know why that posted twice!
LOVE it! I also found out that a cup of coffee can help get me going.
When in doubt, ask your doctor. There are so many conflicting opinions, even here on the board, that it's hard to figure out what to follow. Generally, everything in moderation. A cup of coffee a day isn't bad, and neither is an occasional drink with aspartame in it. Juices are okay even with the natural sugar, and gatorades are okay too (be careful of the electrolytes though, they can give you some BM problems if you drink them too frequently). I've never heard anything bad about green tea - my grandmother is a Nurse Practitioner and she urges everyone to drink green tea. Other teas like white and red are especially good for you, they're fruitier so require less sugar and have no caffeine. I have heard not to drink those Naked(?) drinks because they are lightly or unpasteurized which is a no-no.
I know most of us have given up so much for our pregnancies, but I try not to guilt myself too bad. Years ago our parents and their parents didn't know about these specific limitations and I think we turned out okay. Again, everything in moderation.
