Church for Baptism?

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know of a church in the Metro-Detroit area (preferable Walled Lake area) that performs baptisms without requiring a membership?  Little one is due in a month and we don't belong to any particular church.  Thanks for your help.

Re: Church for Baptism?

  • Great question.  I'd like the same but don't have any leads yet.  Please let us know if you find someplace.

  • We joined a church to have DS baptized. I don't really understand the point of even having a child baptized into a church community if you're not even willing to join a church. It's just a simple form, and doesn't cost you anything to do. The church gets money from the archdioceses based on how many members it has. What you are basically saying is that you would like to find a church community that will serve you, without you having to do anything in return.

It is a misconception that being a member of the church comes with mandatory donations. Our parish didn't even require a donation when we baptized DS, they were very laid back. We had to go to a simple class, and that was it.

Agree! This is a pet peeve of mine. What's the purpose of having a baptism then if you're against joining the church?

    Thanks :)

And we go to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, just FYI.  We love it there.  Super easy to join, just give the office a call.

  • Thanks for the help.  Didn't say I wasn't willing to join a church, I am not a current member anywhere and didn't know if that was a requirement.  Yikes.

  • I found St Anne church in Ortonville that is pretty lax on membership (though we joined, was just a form). The St Joseph in lake Orion only let's members baptize and requires potential members come to meetings. I'd just call around to local parish offices to see what their procedures/requirements for baptism are. I know my parents went to a St Marys when we lived in commerce when I was little, but we moved when I was 5 so thats all I know. ;) I just remember going back for former neighbor's weddings, etc.

  • Wow!  Lots of strong opinions on this one. I don?t intend to be controversial.  I'll try to explain my position - be it right or wrong.

DH and I don?t attend church.  We believe in God and say prayers and try to be conscious contributors to our community.  We try to live our lives in a way that we think God wants us to.  And we will teach our children to live by the same principles.  DH is Catholic ? I am Episcopal. Neither one of us attend church regularly.

I would like to baptize our kids for a variety of reasons but I do not want to convert to Catholicism - or any other religion for that matter.  In baptism/christening ceremonies I?ve been to in the past, the parents/Godparents are asked if they will bring their children up in the Catholic/Episcopal/Lutheran church and in that faith.  I can?t say that I will and I certainly don?t want to lie about it.  I don?t believe in everything that Catholics believe.  Or everything that Episcopals believe.  What I can say for sure is that I will raise my children to believe in God, to understand the commandments, and to live to a high ideal.

I?m willing to join a church but I don?t want to lie and say we?ll attend regularly or send our child to Sunday school, etc.  I?m willing to pay for the service ? just like people do for their weddings - I don?t expect something for nothing.

So what it gets down to is that I?m looking for a community or non-denominational church that will welcome our child into God?s faith.  People hire religious figures to bless their marriages (via a wedding) all the time.  Can we do something similar for our child?

This is a Catholic Church in Ortonville that does not require you to be members, you just take one class and then pick the weekend/mass you want the Baptism.  https://www.churchofstanne.org/  We joined the parish but are not active.  Being in RO that'd be a hike for you, but if you call around to the churches in your area I'm sure the parish secretary would know what their requirements are for Baptism.  Like I said in a PP one church in Lake Orion required you to be members, this one in Ortonville does not.  They even allowed MH's Greek Orthodox best friend to be the godfather and my not confirmed sister to be the godmother.

Some other Christian denominations do not baptise until adulthood, just something to keep in mind.
