What to do when BM stash is dwindling?

I just started back to work last week.  DS gets two bottles (7 ozs. total) at day care every day and I pump twice a day to try to make it up and breastfeed DS during my lunch break and for all other feedings.  The problem is that I'm pumping 1.5-2 ozs. less than he is eating each day.  At this rate, we will run out of stored breastmilk fairly soon.  So, if I am pretty sure I'll run out of stash, what would be the right way to supplement?  Should I give him the amount we're losing each day in formula in the bottles I send now or just use up all the stash and then start supplementing?  He has not had any formula up to this point but he takes BM well from a bottle.

Also, I'm on fenugreek supplements and am eating oatmeal each day and trying to drink plenty of water.  If you have any additional recommendations for increasing supply, please let me know!

  • First I would try and get your supply up. IF that doesn't work, I would use up the frozen and then supplement. That is what we had to do, at 6 months Jack started getting half pumped milk and half formula at daycare.

  • do an extra pumping when lo is asleep for the night.  I know pumping sucks (I like to do it the least possible) but if it's only 2 ounces you are short I'd say its doable!

  • Mine started to dwindle down, too, but I decided to introduce a little bit of formula to make it up.  She eats 3- 5ounce bottles at school, one BF, one formula and then one BF.  I still have a little bit of a frozen stash, but with her being introduced to formula a little at a time, I think the transition will be easier on her stomach as opposed to all at once.

oh- and I did one formula bottle per day for the first week, and since that went fine, I'm now on 2 formula bottles per day.

  • Can you add an extra pumping session in sometime during the day?

It sucks, but sometimes I will get up in the  middle of the night (3/4am) and pump so I can get 6-7oz that can go purely to my freezer stash.  Or what about after DS goes to bed?

  • I was also going to suggest pumping once after LO is in bed. It should be easy to get an extra 2+ oz that way.
  • Thanks everyone for the responses.  I will try to add another pumping session in sometime during the day.  Right now, DS stays up pretty late and I feed him at 10pm and then go to bed myself, so I really don't want to stay up to pump again.  Then again, I'm thinking we should move up his bedtime, so maybe after that I could stay up and pump.
