Trying to Get Pregnant

It's GO time - but first a question......

I charted for several months utilizing both temps and CM to prepare for TTC.  However, I stopped temping about 3 months ago when my doctor advised me that it would be best to no longer take my prescription of Ambien while TTC.  Needless to say, my insomnia has returned in full force since stopping the meds and it has prevented me from getting accurate temps.

Since I can't really temp anymore and we were starting to try with this cycle, I decided to use the ClearBlue Easy OPK instead.  This morning I got my first smiley face on the digital read-out.  Is anyone familiar with this test and how accurate it is?  I always had faith in my temps to tell me that I ovulated - but this, I'm not so sure.

  • OPKs tell you that your body is gearing up to ovulate...they don't confirm the actual process of ovulation. Unfortunately, I do believe temping is the only way to confirm it, but the OPK will help you predict it a little bit better than nothing at all. Good luck to you!

  • I was using cheapies from Walgreens and FR OPKs at first.  I was getting 5 days of +s and Oing in the middle.

When I switched to CBE digis, it cut down to 1 and 2 days respectively.  The first month using them I got only 1 day of +, I O'd the next day.  Last month I got 2 days of +s, and O'd the day after my second one.  So basically I O'd the first day of - OPK after the +s.  (Check my chart to better understand.)

  • OPKs only indicate that your body is gearing up to O, usually within the next 12-36 hours. They don't guarantee that you actually O then. Sometimes your body will gear up to O but then not actually O due to stress or other factors. Since you are unable to temp, tracking OPKs and CM/CP would probably be the next best option. But just know that these signs can't ultimately confirm O the way that temps can. GL!

Yeah, I figured that ANYTHING was better than nothing....and at least I know that I have the ability to ovulate pretty regularly based on past cycles.  But BOOOO for not being able to temp!!!  I mean, I still tried for a while but after a month of wacky, all over the place, temps I just gave up, lol.

I know what you mean :) I think in your case it would be very frustrating to try and temp, especially if you are getting such inaccurate results anyway. Chart your CM too, that should help a little bit along with OPKs! :)

  • I used the Clear Blue digi OPK's my first time around TTC. I had been charting for 16 or 17 months prior so when I started using the OPK's I already had a general idea of when I was O'ing. The month I got pregnant I ditched my thermometer and used just the OPK's. Once I got the smiley face we had sex everyday until it went away. We also had sex 1 day prior to the + opk.

I don't know if this answers your question or not, just my two cents!

  • I have exclusively used these and love them.  When I was temping, I found I would always O after my last positive.  They can't tell you if you have Od, but are pretty accurate.  Also, when you pull the test strip out, you can watch the second line get darker so you know that O is closer.
