Babyproofing Questions

Do you put baby gates at the top and bottom or the stairs?  We have a split level, so I'm not sure if we will need 4 baby gates or just 2.

Additionally, we have a wrought iron banister, and I'm not sure how to attach a baby gate to that, since it's slim like this.  Anyone else dealing with this scenario?

Re: Babyproofing Questions

  • We have a semi-split level as well, and our living room is on the middle level of our house. Instead of gating off each staircase, we ended up putting a gate at the entrance to our living room, so we can keep M in there if necessary. We let him crawl up and down the stairs (with supervision) and he's really good at it now.

  • We have a split level too. I have a gate at the bottom of the stairs for the level where we spend the most time (the living room/dining room/kitchen level). This way, if I'm cooking, I can gate it off so the kids can't go upstairs or downstairs.

I have a stairway similar to yours. I used Retract-a-Gate which worked very well.

They would probably recommend that you buy their "Stair Banister Adapter Kit" to attach it to the wrought iron. However, it wasn't necessary for us. I just bought some of those plastic attachment pieces at Home Depot and attached the gate directly to the bars using that. I'm not sure if that makes sense but if you have questions, let me know.

  • We're bad parents... we never got around to installing baby gates.  (oops!)
  • We had a similar problem and use part of the Super Play Yard b/c we have a cat.  We tried other gates, but the cat couldn't get up and down the stairs properly, so we did it at an angle.

  • I'm in a split level, too, as you know, and we're thinking about the same thing. I am considering just getting gates for the rooms where we want to cage him vs. the stairs.

  • we only have a gate at the top of the stairs but w/ DS we are thinking of putting one on the bottom too (not a split level)
  • We are in a tri-level and ended up gating all of the steps. It wasn't our plan at first, but it does allow for the boys to run freely on each level.

  • we only have a gate on the top of the basement stairs.  Our other staircase is in our living room & if he's in the living room, so are we.  eventually we'll put a gate on his room.  the way our main staircase is, we can't put gates on it securely.

the joys of a small house is that it's easier to keep an eye on him!
