L&D sent me home and had a very painful night

I had contrax from 1:30 pm yesterday. They started 10 minutes to 7-10 and jumped to 5 for two hours. At that point, I called the doc and went to the hospital. I was put on monitor and showed contrax every 5 like clock work. A few 2 and four minutes, but over the two hours mostly five. Then they check me. I was long closed and posterior so they sent me home and minimized my pain. I was so scared to leave because they were getting stronger. I took two benadryl(per their recomendation) and moaned and labored through the night (from about 1 am to now) and they have seemed to slow and am now getting very painful ones every ten mins. I am still laying down. Can someone please give me insight? I am scared, it hurts, and it's my first baby. I am scared to feel like this for days. I am not even favorable for an induction and the nurse last night said since my contrax are less than 6 mins apart I can't have the cervidil, which we were going to do Thursday night anyway. I don't understand how I am not inlabor right now. What should I do and when should I go back in? They said when I can't talk through, but what about the 5,1,1 rule? TIA.

Re: L&D sent me home and had a very painful night

  • Sounds like prodromal labor to me.  Lots of folks call it false labor but there is nothing false about how it feels.  It can last a couple days for some women and be very exhausting.  The reason you were sent home is because there was no change in your cervix.  L/D personnel define labor as when there is actual cervical change.  The 5-1-1 rule exists because usually that is a sign of true active labor (e.g. your cervix is dilating), but as you are experiencing, there are always exceptions and every labor is different.  I hope things kick into high gear for you soon.  I had 2 1/2 days of prodromal labor with this, my second baby.  I know how you are feeling right now.  But take heart - labor will come eventually (and probably sooner rather than later) and that baby won't stay in forever.

  • I agree with previous poster, I woke up with contractions that were pretty regular and lasted all day, and the next day at 2:30 in the morning it turned into active labor, so about 20 hours of prodromal labor for me, but I think it really helped my body prepare for labor.  You may progress quickly once you start to dilate, it seems like a long early labor helps with that.  Good luck.

You are definitely in labor.  It will come soon.  Try and find some relief - walk, walk, walk.  Also, find something to distract you (easier said than done).  And lastly, go back when you feel like you need to be at the hospital (yes you shouldn't be talking through them and when that's the case - it's time to head in - most likely they'll be consistent 3-5 minutes apart).
