Is your baby sitting up?

I attended a function this weekend and my friends little boy who is about a week younger than my daughter was sitting up independently and reaching for toys in front of him.   My daughter is no where near sitting yet.  She just leans forward and then rolls to the side when I attempt.  Just wondering if there are other's out there that aren't...or are sitting.

Thanks!

Re: Is your baby sitting up?

  • Yes and no.

He can sit on the floor and can hold himself up independently for a short period of time and sometimes he puts his hands on his ankles for support. He likes to sit up on his changing table and look in the mirror (I hung a mirror beside the changing table so he can flirt with himself while I'm changing him).

If he's tired or just not feeling it, he'll fold in half or flop over.

He does reach for toys if sitting or laying down and he'll rake them toward himself sometimes (obviously not if he's holding on to something for support).

  • DS sits unassisted, but he's very strong all-around. That being said, he's not super-verbal. DH think he'll be quiet like he is, but I think he's just putting more effort into working out!

  • DD can sit up, but only very short spans of time. Maybe 20 seconds or less. She always reaches for something and it makes her topple over.
  • in very short spurts she sits by herself with no arm bracing but even with her arms for support its short like 15 seconds or so. she face plants a lot but I try to help soften the fall by almost rolling her onto her stomach.

  • Yes, he's been sitting for about a month, but he's slightly freakish in that department. Our pedi said he'll probably walk early too. His dad walked at nine months, and he can stand and creep, so I wouldn't be shocked but I wish he wouldn't.

  • Yes, she's been sitting on her own for a little over a month.  She didn't become a pro at getting herself into a sitting position until a few weeks ago (she goes from crawling position and backs up to sit).  Now she'd rather sit and play than lay down any day.  Her pedi warned me at her 4 month appt that I'd have to watch out for her since she was already sitting short times unassisted, and boy was she right!

Not really, but she's almost there. She can tripod for any length of time, just hangin and looking around. When she lifts her hands off the ground, she can only hold her balance for 20 or 30 seconds tops before wobbling over. I entice her with toys and she gets stronger every day!

  • Milla is one of the oldest ones here ( born feb 15) and she is sitting up so good. Reaching for toys in front of her lifting toys above her head and not falling. She doesn't crawl or scoot though... may be we will be the ones who will skip the whole crawling part
  • DD will sit up, but eventually wobbles and falls over.  She will grab for toys when on her back in her gym, but not when they are in front of her and she is propped up.  I'm not worried.  Actually, I'm just excited that she started rolling this week.  I'm not concerned with any other milestones at this point!
  • My DD isn't sitting up on her own yet at all.  When we do sit her up, she stays for 5-10 seconds and then topples sideways.

  • Jessica can't sit on her own at all yet.  She does really really well with very little assisstance from me or her boppy, but on her own she falls over immediately.

  • Nope, 5 months is quite early for sitting.  Most babies learn to sit between 6-8 months of age.  I wouldn't worry at all. Stella's cousin didn't learn to properly sit until she started crawling (around 9 months) and she still learned to walk unassisted at 11 months, which is very good.

I tried sitting Stella up today on a picnic blanket in the grass and she could sit for a few seconds while supporting herself by holding her feet or putting hands down in front of her folded legs, but otherwise she has to be fully supported in order to sit.  I think she likes lying on her belly and rolling around much better - sitting isn't that interesting to her just yet.

  • Thanks all.  I know we aren't suppose to compare and all babies develop on their own time but I was just astonished to see him sitting so well.   I'll continue to work with LO she is doing great with other things so must just be taking her time.

It's so nice to see and hear about others progress being similar.

    :-)

  • This post just goes to show that all of our babies have their own strength areas.  My LO doesn't sit well unassited, but has been rolling over back to front since 2.5 months and is going to be crawling any second.  At the 2 month and then 4 month pedi visit he was 2 month ahead of where he should be in most of the "tests" per the pedi, but there are some things he can't do that his cousin who is a month behind him can do.

It is fun to see how different they all are :)

  • My DD is showing absolutely no interest in wanting to sit up. She will sit in her Bumbo for short periods of time, but when I try to assist her in sitting up, she just tries to throw herself backwards.

  • She is just now starting to sit in the tripod position and can sometimes sit up straight for a short time. She is still pretty wobbly though. :)

  • He can sit very hunched over for short periods of time but usually topples over. He doesn't seem that interested in trying to sit up, although we practice every day.

  • My daughter will sit unassuated for up to 5 minutes. Some of that she tri-pods, but this last week she's started picking up her arms and working on her balance all on her own. She now reaches for toys and can shake them while sitting on her own. When she falls over she holds an arm out asking for help to sit back up. She ealways been very physical though.
  • I know the feeling you have...For weeks everyone would ask if LO hd rolled over yet. Just last weekend he finally did it but I hate the pressure I put on myself.

I also believe it has a lot to do with their personality..LO is very laid back and doesnt care to go anywhere. He started sitting up this week but it doesnt last long...and something has to keep his attention forward.

  • My LO sits up if I hold his hands.  He'll be 5 months at the end of August.  He can't really do it on his own yet.  Not that I really see him ever sitting still.  I'm pretty sure he just wants to keep moving!
  • Mason cant sit on his own yet but if I put him down sitting he can stay sitting for awhile, hes also not crawling yet, when he does tummy time he sticks his butt up and does a inch worm manouver but dosent push all the way up , Iam not worried iam happy hes rolling , I think they are still a little young to be sitting and crawling , Iam super impressed with all the los that can crawl already!

  • He can hold himself up for a moment with his arms but he can't really sit up.  I'm waiting and hoping but not sure when that is going to happen.
