Babies: 3 - 6 Months

FF baby not a big eater?

I am driving myself crazy, reading how much everyone else's LO eats. Our daughter is small, slightly over 11 pounds and 22.5 inches. I wasn't able to breastfeed her due to medicine I am on, so she is formula fed.

At about 7 weeks she was STTN, she eats about 5 times during the day. A 5oz, 3 4oz servings and a 7oz right before she goes to bed. (Roughly between 22-24 oz a day) If we try to feed her anymore than that, she pushes the bottle away; or will spit it up.

Anyone else LO not a big eater?

  • Same here. LO eats about 24 oz a day. She has never even eaten a 7oz bottle. It's usually 4 oz with an occasional 6oz thrown in. Her pedi said to not even worry about it as long as she continues to grow properly.

ETA: Forgot to add, she's 25.5 in and 15 lbs.

  • That sounds like plenty to me - a 7 oz bottle and 22-24 oz a day?  Don't worry!

(My son is bigger, but eats 22 oz ish FWIW and can't eat 7 oz at a time!)

  • DD isn't a big eater either. She's 5.5 mths old and only eats 24-28ozs a day. I'm constanly worried about her eating since we had such a hard time getting her back up to her birth weight for the first couple months, but am slowly learning to relax. Our GP and Pediatrician (she's monitored for a heart murmur) aren't worried since she continues to gain steadily and meet all of her developmental milestones.

  • That is a relief.

She rarely eats the full 7oz, usually it is 6.5 or 6.75 right before she goes to bed. For some reason, she rarely spits up after the bedtime feeding, so we give her the biggest bottle then. She eats the 5 oz first thing in the morning around 6:30am (her last feeding is at about 7:30pm) and then the four oz bottles during the rest of the day.

  • i've always heard that a rough outline is a minimum of 2x their weight and maximum of 3x weight, so if she's 11lbs, she should eat somewhere between 22-33 oz a day.  given that, she's doing just fine!

  • Wow @ 7oz! My LO is 4 months, he eats 4.5-5.5 oz at a time, usually about 6 or 7 times a day. He was 13lbs 11oz and 23.5 inches at his last Appt (he was born 4 weeks early). I believe I read a baby should eat about 2-2.5oz per pound of body weight in a 24 hour period, so she is doing perfect! Don't stress!
  • My LO eats anywhere between 20 and 30 oz. a day (although he hasn't eaten anything close to 30 in awhile).  I told his pedi about it, but she wasn't concerned.  She said that some babies have a faster metabolic rate and digest their food faster, and some are slower which would make them not feel hungry as much.  She said as long as he is eating and seems satisfied (and growing), he will let us know when he is hungry.  I always get very paranoid about his eating because he was in the NICU a couple of days after birth because he was dehydrated from not eating at all.  Ever since our pedi said she wasn't worried, I have been able to relax a LOT.

Oh and my LO's weighs 16 lbs 2.75 oz and is 26.5 inches (at his 5 month appt).

  • My LO is just over 4 months, she weights 11.5 pounds! She's tiny and a poor eater (due to A/R) but the doctors aren't at all worried. She is gaining fine and is a happy baby. Little stinker.... =)
