Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Epidural?

My LO is 4 months old. I reluctantly chose to have an epidural that didn't go so well. After ELEVEN tries, the doctors finally got it right. And after they actually got it right everything was fine.

But now (4 months later) I'm having really bad lower back pain. At first I thought it might just be from carrying DD  around, but I know that most women have a lot of back problems after an epidural.

I just wanted to know if anyone else had any similar problems?

Where did you get this information? I'm sorry you had problems, but my epidural was the best thing I did during my labor and delivery.  I had a simple, painless, easy birth.  I will do it again in a heartbeat.  As I said, sorry you're still having issues.

  • Oh my labor/delivery was great! Pain free and REALLY quick. But, I think the anesthesiologist that did it was fresh out of med school! He didn't know what he was doing, they had to call in another doctor and he got it on the first try. I would have an epidural again in a heart beat, but I haven't had any back problems until now so I'm just wondering if it's from the epidural or something else.

  • issues after epidurals are usually spinal headaches... and mid back pain from where the sight was...

lower back pain is super common as a side effect from pregnancy (carrying extra weight), hunching over while nursing/ bottle feeding/ changing diapers. lifting little one and carrying also adds pressure on the lower ba. hth

  • If you've had no problems until recently, you've probably hurt it lifting.

And holyshit to 11 sticks. I can't believe they let him do that.

  • I started having random back pain/spasms when LO was about 3 weeks. Back pain is a side effect if the epi but I dont think you would be feeling it 4 months later. And you said lower back, so not near the injection site? Like you mentioned it could be from carrying LO around. I saw my Chiro and After a deep massage and an adjustment I was 100% better! I suggest the same for you. GL!

This. Whoever invented the epidural deserves a parade IMO. No back problems for me or anyone I know irl (which admittedly does not include many mom).

  • My best friend had back problems after her epidural. I was her labor coach so I was there when the epidural was placed and like you they had a lot of problems placing it. All of the problems she had played a part in my decision to not get one. She still has back pain and her DD is 5 years old. It is not normal to have back pain this far out from the epidural so you should certainly see doctor about it whether it is actually from the epidural or not.

Yea it was a painful experience. I was an athlete in high school, baskatball was my life. That was his excuse, "You have a lot of built up muscle..." I'm not an angry person, but I almost threw him out the window, and DH wasn't happy either. I coild only have one person in the room for the epidural, and he HATES needles. So he let my mom stay with me. He said if I was in there he would have been dead.

But I know most of the time women had back problems after an epidural but I just wanted to make sure it wasn't  anything serious.

    Thanks everyone!

  • I can tell where I got my epidural, but it does not bother me on a day to day basis. When I crack my back, it won't crack in that spot, but that is all. Having back pain that is bothering you everyday is not normal.

  • You can definitely have residual back issues from an epidural, but there are so many other things that could cause it with lifting mechanics and stuff with a baby.  I didn't have an epidural with this last pregnancy and I'm having MAJOR back issues and going to a chiro and PT right now.  I say get an appointment with your doc now to learn proper lifting techniques, how to strengthen the muscles, etc. b/c I definitely let it get too far and a little PT or chiro adjustment when I was only 2 weeks into the pain probably would have helped avoid my current condition.

this just isn't true.  most of the time, women do not have ANY back problems from an epidural.  a small number of women do have pain at the injection site, but it certainly isn't "most of the time" and it definitely shouldn't still be going on 4 months later.

  • I don't know if they did my epidural wrong or just I was one of those unlucky people that is doesn't work for. That being said again I totally will do it again for baby #2 in the hopes of sparing myself all that torture, I am jealous of all the people who said birth was pain free or just like bad cramps, I wish! If I lean that part of my back again a hard wood chair I do feel some pain in that spot but in any normal chair and everyday life I don't feel pain, I would go get your back checked out.

  • I had a problem with my epidural, but I don't have any problems now.  When they administered it, my spinal cord was really close to the surface and so they coulndn't go very far in....which resulted in gas bubbles that rose to the top of my spinal cord giving me excruciating neck pain...worse than the labor pains.  They were able to do a different type of medicine to relieve both pains, but it was awful.  I don't have any epi pain now, but I have some pain from giving birth...my SI joints are out of place and I'm trying to get them back in.  It's made a lot worse by lifting LO and sitting to nurse/pump.  It feels like my hip needs to pop but can't.

I would definitely see your doctor, it could be a really simple fix.  I hope you get to feeling better soon.

  • i've had weird issues with my back cracking (or more like crackling?) and neckaches since my epi. My Dr said it's possible for a small amount of air to go into your spine that would cause some pressure or popping. It should dissipate (sp?) over time.

Is your issue like pressure in your spine? Or a real aching pain? Certainly worth having it checked for peace of mind (especially where you had a rough time getting the epi) but it may just be from carrying LO. I know I have days that i'm sore from that! Especially if I carry the carseat a few times.
