Babies on the Brain

well, God help us all

Just booked the tickets to fly home for my brother's wedding next month.

By myself with the duo.

::cries and rocks in the corner::

Other than the travel DVD player(s), somebody give me some tips for getting kids that hate sitting still to sit still for 2+ hours.  Por favor.  I'm not going to survive this, am I?

  • I am convinced that the duo are perfect angels and everything will go perfectly.

But just in case... Maybe have a few "new" toys/activities that they haven't seen before or in a while that will keep their interest for an extended period of time (which is what when you are a toddler? 5-10 minutes?)

    How long is the flight?

  • The only thing with coloring books is that they have a tendency to drop crayons, so those might be a last resort.  Movies seem to make them happy enough on long car rides, so I'm hoping they work on the plane too.  I'll probably bring a stash of lollipops too.  Hahahaha
  • My mom was frequently the one that traveled with my brother & I and we flew a lot (HI to the Mainland is a looong flight).

I distinctly remember her carryon was full of presents. She said she had a new one for every hour of the flight, for both of us, but you only got a new present if she didn't have to tell us to behave. I remember them being really big presents, but she said they were stupid little dollar store things. They were wrapped up and everything. That, and she told me they used to give us benadryl before flights. So maybe a bag of goodies that you can dole out as necessary?

It's a few minutes over 2 hours.  I'm not super concerned about getting us all through the airport since I'm planning on checking everything except for a backpack with some stuff for them to do, and their double umbrella stroller.  My biggest concern is the noise of taking off because of Nathan's noise issues.  If he flips out at that time, the entire flight is going to be miserable.

  • Lots and lots of food!

And brand new toys/books that are just for the plane!

  • Will he wear headphones? To either listen to music, or to deadedn the noise?

Or, can you take him to the airport or play recordings of the noise and give him a treat? I'm not comparing Nathan to a dog, AT ALL, but that's how I conditioned Riley to fire engines when we moved to the city. We hung out by the fire house and everytime they turned the siren on he got the really smelly liver treats.

I hope that came across how I meant it to....

Do they let you wear headphones during takeoff now?  Because that would be the ideal solution, but I didn't think they'd let him.

And I got what you meant.  ;)  He loves airplanes, and I've started talking about them a lot with them, so hopefully that will help.  There are planes constantly flying over our house too, but I'm worried that when he's IN one it will be different.  And then of course Riley is still pretty terrified of jet engine noise thanks to the Thunderbirds, so that should be fun too.  I just remembered that fun fact.  Crap.  LOL

You definitely need to get those crayola wonder markers and some of the coloring book accessories that go along with them. DD can be entertained by those for a long time.

  • There shouldn't be any problem with them wearing headphones, it's not like they'll understand the safety demonstration (which is why I assume they don't want you to wear them)

And it might not be that bad, it's quieter inside the plan than outside as far as the engines. Plus, sometimes they still let little kids peek inside the cockpit before taking off. I thought thy had stopped that, but a friend of mine did that recently on a trip. FYI, she also packed a ton of yummy snacks, and her son promptly threw up halfway through the flight, so be aware of that as well.

(And I still say Benadryl if you know how your kids react to it. My personal opinion, I know not everyone would agree with it)

Those are the ones that only write on the special paper, right?

It's not the holding on part that's the problem, it's the "oh noes I accidentally on purpose dropped my crayon, will you pick it up for me Mommy?" part that sucks.  Because you either continue to pick it up and there are no consequences, or they flip the eff out when you say hell-to-the-no stop dropping your shiit kid.  (Obviously I don't say that in those words.)

This.  These were a life saver on our 10 hour trek to VA last year.

  • I'd hit up the dollar store & get a back full of STUFF to keep them busy.

Also, I 2nd the color wonder coloring books/paints stuff. Those are amazing.

Benadryl for sure--it actually will help keep their ears from popping. & for sure a bag of lollipops :-)
