Cloth Diapering

If cost was no matter, would you still buy prefolds for newborns?

for the newborn stage?

Tell me why/why not!

Re: If cost was no matter, would you still buy prefolds for newborns?

  • They weren't my primary diaper, but I bought some because I got 2 dozen for $14 on a Christmas sale.

They are handy - they can stuff a pocket, they were fine for some nb use where we were changing every hour or two anyway (he pooped that much...). I use them for breastfeeding/burp cloths all over the house. I would say a dozen would probably get used as one thing or another and are worth having around.

  • Yes, because we used them all the time for spit rags, too.  They were so handy and easy to have around.

  • I probably still would.  They were easy.  I agree with Pixy - they were awesome to have as burp rags.  I would be able to just throw a bunch of prefolds in the diaper bag and they were multi-use.

  • I only had a few prefolds but should we ever have another child I will stick with them. They seemed to work as well (if not better) than the other options we used (GM, LilJoey's, Grovia). I would also get more Grovia AIO's. I really liked them.

  • Definitely! I love GMD prefolds. I didn't bother with a Snappi--I just folded the prefold in thirds and put a cover over it. On the other hand, I love Kissaluvs as well and they're sooo soft. So, I went back and forth between prefolds and Kissaluvs when I had a newborn (sigh, my youngest is now 15 months old).

  • Yes - even though they were an extra step, they were the most absorbent on my baby. They were also super-easy to trifold and lay in a cover when she was too big for NB stuff but too small for OS.

  • Yep. They can be customized for fit, and a prefold/cover reliably held in all BF poos (much more so than the XS AIOs). Plus, like PP said, they're useful in SO many ways.

  • yes.  I had $$$$ pockets for when DS got older & they repel & suck.  We went back to pre-folds & love them.
  • I'm planning on getting a dozen orange edge and a dozen yellow edge for our next LO, even though I'm planning on mainly doing fitteds and AIOs. They're so handy and are great to have as back up.
  • I love my prefolds, they are our primary diapering option! My only complaint is that I don't have more!

  • Yes and I used them for my daughter along with newborn fitteds.  I would forgo the cotton ones though and just use bamboo.  The Sbish flats are amazing.

  • Yes, I love them.  They were easy for H to trifold before he learned how to use the snappi.  They are so fast to throw in the pail and wash too.  No stuffing or folding.  I just took them out of the dryer and then threw them back into the bin that we used to stored them.  Pockets, while easy, take time to stuff.  In the beginning I was so tired these really were the fastest/easiest.  I wish I had 36, not 24.

  • Yes!  They are so easy to use and change every 1-2 hours when DS poops.  They are easy to wash too.  I love my prefolds.  The only thing I would do different is not buy as many orange edge and buy more yellow edge since my DS was big at birth.

  • I was going to originally say no, but PPs have reminded me of the other uses. I like to lay a few of them out on DS's play mat when he has naked time so I don't need to take it apart and wash it daily if (when) he pees. I also lay one under him on the change pad when changing a poopy diaper so I don't have to wash the change pad covers as often if there is some than gets on it during the change.

  • I didn't do them this time and wish I had. If there is a next time I'm getting me some and a few KL0's too!

  • Yep.  Ditto pp that they have lots of uses besides diapering (doublers, burp cloths, and we lined our changing pad with one to catch errant poop because we had a lot more prefolds than pad covers).  Also, I like that a prefold will fit practically any newborn, unlike some of the fitteds/pockets/AIOs where you might have fit issues.  You might have to try one or two different folds, but IMO they work really well and it's almost impossible to beat the price, unless you go to flats.

  • I had a few with DS, and hated them, but I think they were too small. So, I would probably try again with a few. I still think fitteds would be the mainstay of my stash though, they're so good at holding in explosive newborn poo!

  • 100% yes. We had other newborn diapers that just didn't measure up to our GMD orange edge prefolds and thirsties covers. Maybe if I had tried more newborn fitteds I would have said no (I really love fitteds right now), but given my experience, I think newborn prefolds are the best option.
