Work Stress Causing Medical Problems

Hi Ladies,

I just wanted to share this story in hopes for some encouraging information.... So I am an assistant to an account manager for insurance and he is not always the most pleasant. Some days hes nice but most days he treats me like crap he belittles me in front of everyone and talks to me like nobody should. The office knows and has heard him say these comments before but nobody does anything about it. Well the other day he made me feel so little and embarrassed in front of everyone I was just about in tears........  I went to the HR manager and she said that she would let the main boss know about this (who btw already is aware of the situation) when the timming is right. You have to catch him in the right mood she says. Well anyways long story short its been almost a week and she has yet to mention anything. I am basically taking that as they are not going to do anything.

About the medical issues........... He makes me feel so tense at work that I dont even want to come in. It has caused some pretty terrible migraines along with giving me heart palpatations, increased heart rate, feeling sick to my stomach!! I'm just so stressed and anxious to be at work with him!!

What do you suggest? I read that the doctor should take me off work for stress but IDK if mine really would.

  • I would go to H/R again and tell them if they do not do anything about it, you will get an attorney and discuss discrimination charges against him and the company.... Tell them you have gone to them to discuss and the head boss has already been aware of it and no one is doing anything about it and you will not tolerate it.. H/R has to do something about it. It's not right. It's affecting your health and your unborn babies health. I would not put up with it at all. You have all the rights here....Good luck and keep us posted. I went through hell with my first pregnancy 7 years ago because of my employer...I'm so happy where I am now, so I know the last thing you need is stress when pregnant. When I get stressed at work over something my boss tells me to calm down it's not good for the baby or me....You don't need a boss that causes the stress.

  • I just got put on stress leave from my job. I can't tell you the load that has been lifted off my shoulders! However, before I saw my Dr I made sure to try to talk to work about lessening my workload (my situation was a little different but no less stressful), and any sort of compromises that could be reached. They refused and told me that if they were going to have someone help me with part of my job then they may as well get someone to do my entire job. This was said after I approached them a couple of times. That was the end of my rope and I went to my Dr the following week to ask for stress leave.

I would definately try and follow up with HR to make sure that someone did talk to him. If nothing is being done, then don`t put yourself through the stress anymore. It`s not worth it!

  • Ugh! This was me when we were TTC. The doctor finally told me I had to let up on some stress

I don't have any good advice because I was self employed. I couldn't complain to anyone since I was my own boss.

I will say that the stress is HORRIBLE for you and if there's anyway at all to erase it, do it. I'm still not working and we're living off DH's salary alone. We've cut a few things but it hasn't been nearly as bad as we feared.

Exhaust all other ways (complaining to HR more, etc) but in the end do what's best for you. Talk to your doctor about it. If there's some sort of medical note then HR might take more notice?

  • So there is a such thing as "stress leave"? How long is that leave for? I think that my doctor would just laugh at me really! It sounds kinda silly but its really getting to me and making me physically sick!! And I know that I did what I had to do by going to HR and she has done nothing about it. I work in a small office and work is pretty slow this time of year so I'm not really doing much right now but just being here with my "boss" is killing me with stress!!! It really sucks I have another migraine today and feel just sick!

I think I am going to talk to my doctor on Thursday but I just feel like it may be silly and he may not let me off. Thanks for all your words and responses its really nice to know I'm not alone!!

  • I was put on a weeks stress leave by my Dr and I have now been instructed to take my maternity leave early due to said work related stress. I am grateful that my dr as done this because all of the stress has lead to a mild anxiety disorder which I don't wish on anybody. While financially this is more of a stress, we have to look out for our babies.

  • Thanks for the help ladies! I actually went to my doctor today (who btw is a male) and he basicly told me I need to not let it bother me or quit my job as this stress related stuff landing me in the hospital a couple of days ago with a TERRIBLE unbarable migraine!! He said if I keep letting it bother me I will be spending a lot of time in the ER untill the baby is born! OMG!! I was in tears in there I felt just like I do at work!! I also told him about some other issues I have been having ..... such as buring va j j (if ya know what i mean) and instead of addressing that he blamed it on the stress too!!!!!

Ohhh and about the anxiety disorder you mentioned i believe i have that as well! When I get upset or at work I tend to get heart palpatations, sweaty, pale, light headed, feeling of passing out....  etc So i guess he just doesnt really care like I thought!!  Well needless to say as soon as we left his office completley worked up and crying we went to another doctor, I have an appointment on Wed so we will see how that goes ohhh and btw its a female!!! Maybe she will understand better!
