You're fine. Often, being outside is safer than being in buildings during an earthquake-- esp on the east coast where buildings are older and not usually built to earthquake code.

I'm going to guess that if the ground is opening up and swallowing people, being inside a house isn't going to help much. Sinkholes (I'm assuming that's what you're worried about) can open up underneath a building just as easily as in the yard or at a playground.

TBH, I don't think I'm thinking of anything logical. I watch to many the world is ending movies so all I'm picturing is a giant crack opening up in my backyard . Ahh anxiety, what would I do without you? Lol

just stand far clear of those older buildings if you are on the outside of them.
