Anyone have a baby who is a "choker"?

We have said all along that we were going to do Babyled Weaning but I don't think it is going to happen.

Lila has always done a thing where she kind of chokes on her breath. It happens maybe once a week. Last night she did it BIG TIME and woke DH and I out of a dead sleep (she is in a co-sleeper).

So I guess it is purees after all. Dangit. I guess trying recipes is fun, and I like pureeing stuff so it won't be so bad but I was looking forward to big chunks of avocado and spaghetti.

Re: Anyone have a baby who is a "choker"?

  • That would scare the crap out of me.

I got a food processor as a wedding gift and I squee'ed knowing I could use it for purees.

  • I'm sorry! That is really scary. Maybe she'll grow out of it in the next few months?
  • Is that the same as a "gasper"? Mine still does the newborn gasping that (apparently? via my pedi) they all do.

I hope not because I really want to BLW!

No, not the same thing. Jack did that, it was no biggie. This is like...I live in fear of cold and flu season choking.

  • DS seems to have trouble with his saliva, and coughs and sputters sometimes.I plan on asking his pedi about it at his 4 month appointment.

  • I wonder about this with Viv.  She seems to "choke" on her spit sometimes.  She has so much of it now, lots of drool, and sometimes it's like she can't get it down when she swallows.  It freaks me out!  I'm always scared she'll actually have trouble breathing.  Even though I'm a nurse, when it's your baby, you still freeze up.

I think being a nurse makes it worse! You automatically think the worst, like "OMG, he will get aspiration pneumonia!"

  • Yep. My friend Shannon (who had 1 reflux baby but the "choker" was not one) had the same issue.  I have it too. It's not reflux, it's just a choking thing.

She's started rolling and I caught her twice last night waking up kind of choking/gagging on her tummy. Freaked me the eff.out. My pedi said to leave her on her tummy if she rolls, but the choking makes me second guess that advice.

  • She chokes and sputters at least once a day on my boob. And has started coughing/choking recently.

J does this too. Either bottle or breast (I pump when at work so DH gives him a bottle) and we've had the terrifying chocking on something in his sleep bouts too. I just figured it was his reflux.

OK now I am a tad concerned.  T has bad reflux and he sometimes coughs like he is choking, I just figured it went hand in hand with his reflux.  He only chokes on the breast when I am engorged (which I try to take care of by pumping some before).  But sometimes he does it while taking a bottle.

I wasn't worried about it... but should I be?

His three plus my one; we are all excited to welcome a little one!

  • Yes. He did it today in the fabric store and a man straight up panicked like I've never seen.  He does it once or twice a day (sometimes he skips a day, but it's rare) so I have no hope of baby led weaning...he needs food training.

My boy does the same as above. I thought it was normal. I think choking on milk/breast is different than choking randomly on air/breathing. Right?

  • DD has been doing this lately, but I just thought she was choking on the insane amount of saliva she's produced since starting to teeth.  Now I'm a little worried that our BLW plans won't happen...
