Being from MD, and living on the east coast my entire life, I have never experienced an earthquake. Well, that just changed! Hope everyone else is OK. Apparently it was right outside DC in VA. My puppy freaked out, which actually made me freak out even more, before I realized what was happening.

and after 82 days in the NICU, our little girl is home!
i felt it too! its crazy
*~ My Blog ~*
It probably started a little before 2, maybe around 1:50? Down here it seemed to last forever, but I think I felt it for a good 20 seconds. It is possible you felt it in OH, my brother said they felt it in NYC.
I'm just a couple towns north of Boston, and didn't feel a thing.
Same here. Wouldn't have known there was an earthquake if it hadn't been for this post.
It has been reported to be felt in NY, and I know people who live in southern NC that felt it. They said it was around a 5.8 magnitude about 35 mi. outside of Richmond, VA

I'm in Richmond, well right outside of the city and it was really really scary. I felt like I was going to throw up, my MIL lives about a mile away and she is here now we were both really scared but everything seems to be ok. A building in the city is being evacuated because it is bowed. and they are saying check your gas lines, headed out side now, praying for no reports of injury.
As someone born & raised in Southern California, I can't help but giggle. OF COURSE I hope that everyone is okay & that there is no major damage. But the reaction of people SO FAR from the epicenter amuses me. Watching people on the news in NYC evacuate & stand outside with WTF looks on their faces..... Yes, 5.9 would have made me get in the emergency stairwell (the safest place to go) but I doubt I would have enven gone down the stairs. After the shaking stopped, I would have gone back to my desk, picked up anything that fell, gone online to check out the stats & then gone back to work. No one in my local family would have even called to see how anyone else was.
But let me say again: I HOPE EVERYONE IS OKAY & my prayers go out to anyone that may habe been adversley affected.
You definitely felt it in Cleveland, i was at work about an hour and a half east of Cleveland and we all felt it. It was so weird like the whole building was shaking for a minute or two.

I think it is just unsettling - it is not something we usually experience. I was worried it was a large explosion or something unnatural that caused it. A concern here is that buildings aren't really built to sustain earthquakes, so that is why a lot of the buildings are being evacuated. I also think people don't know how to react or handle the earthquake. We have fire drills, tornado drills, but nothing about earthquakes.
When a good majority of the population over here has never felt an earthquake, I quite frankly can't blame them. We didn't evacuate, I was actually the only one in my office and couldn't figure out what was going on.
After 9/11, I'm betting this is probably protocol for anything remotely close to what could be considered a threat or attack. While it could be something (relatively) harmless, no one knows.
As an other person said, none of our buildings are built to withstand earthquakes. It could quite possibly be a dangerous situation here.
DH is in DC right now and said it was"intense." He lived in the Bay Area for a few years so he does have some basis for comparison.
I'm in upstate NY and didn't feel a thing. But I'm from Seattle originally, so I've felt my share of quakes, including the Nisqually quake in 2001. I lived in Virginia for a few years and was surprised when we had a 4.0 quake how strong it was. A 5.9 quake centered near D.C. may not be West Coast in scale, but if it was felt as far away as it was, I'm sure it felt pretty strong, especially for people who aren't used to earthquakes at all.
I agree with uncharch.
I happen to think this is not a giggling matter. The bedrock here on the east coast is formed differently than the west coast. When we get an earthquake it can and will spread far and wide unlike the west coast. Not to mention the fact that we rarely have earthquakes and aren't equipped with a "response" system to this sort of potential disaster.
I am a kindergarten teacher and I've never even considered, "What would we do in the event of an earthquake?" We don't have "earthquake drills" as we do tornado and hurricane drills.
I wouldn't be giggling if CA were dealing with hurricanes (cyclones) the way we do on the east coast. I'm sure that people there are not prepared to deal with them b/c you never have them just as we aren't equipped to deal with earthquakes b/c we rarely have them.
I live in South Central PA and I was the only one in my office that felt it. I didnt even think of TMI till a patient mentioned it later in the day. Glad no sirens went off!
