I won the lottery

Hah!  Not.  I got a call today from a guy at the "Mega Millions Company" who claimed we were drawn at random from a list of addresses for "paying all of our bills on time."  We won $7.5 million plus a new Mercedes Benz, and to claim it all we have to do is register with their company, which requires buying some sort of registration card that costs a mere $100.

I'm a little ashamed I didn't just hang up the minute he tried to tell me I won, since it was pretty obvious it had to be a scam, but at least I came to my senses before I gave him any sort of information.  I Googled it afterwards and found out there are tons of similar scams out there.  They use the name of a legitimate lottery or one close to it, but the fact is you cannot win a lottery if you don't enter it!

So I guess I'll keep my job for a while longer...LOL!

  • Wonder how he came up with that amount?

    And a Mercedes too.

    Glad you weren't scammed.

  • My mild-mannered husband LOVES to mess with telemarketers and solicitors.  He would have a field day with that guy!

  • I would have said, "That's fantastic!  Just deduct the $100 from my $7.5 million!"

  • I like the part on "paying bills on time" :)

Maybe it's telling you something though - maybe you should start buying lottery tickets?

  • You fooled me! I've been buying tickets now and then and last week a couple from Minnesota won $220 million just like that. Of course, it comes out to $88 mil after taxes and if they take a lump sum, but I'll take $88 mil! Heck, I'll take 1 mil!!

I've gotten those kind of offers in the mail and I'm always temped to call. Then I remember I didn't sign up for any special contests or anything, so it must be a scam. Good thing you didn't shell out the $100!
