Hi ladies,
I was just curious what time your LO wakes up from his/her last nap?
My DD is NOT sleeping through the night. I'm trying to think of every possible reason. She usually goes to bed around 8:15-8:30. She's up from her last nap around 5:00pm.
When I feed her around 6 she starts to doze off though. I just get her through her feeding & keep her up. 6pm seems way too early for bed.
Just wanted to know your thoughts.
Re: Last nap of the day vs bed time
Sounds to me like you need to push bedtime up to 7:00-7:30. Is she hard to put down at night? I only ask because she could be WAY overtired. 2 hours should be maximum waketime between naps/bed right now.
My DD's routine goes like this:
7:30 wake/eat
9-11 Nap (she usually wakes an hour into it and I put her in the swing)
11 eat
12:30-2:30 nap
2:30 eat
4:30-5:30 cat nap sometimes this is only 30 minutes but holds her to bedtime
5:30 eat
7:30 eat bed
I was thinking of putting her to bed early. It is still so bright outside, so I do have a hard time. When I put her down around 8 it is pretty seemless.
Our schedule is this:
7:15 wake/eat
8:30-10:30 nap
10:30 eat
1:30-3:00 nap
3:30 eat
4:30 - 5:00 nap
8:00-8:30 bedtime
1:00am - wake up to nurse
3:30am - wake up to nurse - at this point I bring her in bed with me
We nurse off/on until morning....I'm tired!
I would play around with it. We discovered that our LO sleeps best (one wake up) when he goes to sleep at about 8, or just after, so now we try to get him to catnap around 5:30 or 6 for about 30 minutes.
When we moved bedtime from 9 to 7ish, he went down better, and now he's going down even easier at 8. Just seems to be his ideal time (this means we start bedtime routine at 7:30ish).
Yeah, I like to have 12 hours between waketime/bedtime/waketime. So, try an hour earlier and see if it helps.
Also, have you considered trying a dream feed before you go to bed? This might eliminate the 1am waking. Feed her at 10 (no more than 3 hours after bedtime) and put her back down. See if it helps. Some babies respond really well to a dream feed and other babies it disrupts sleep even more. Give it a try and see what happens
I will definitely try it. It seems that at bedtime she eats for a very short period of time before she actually passes out. This could definitely be the reason for the 1am wakeup. She doesn't really seem to eat a lot through out the evening though, which makes me think she's up for comfort instead of hunger. Her diaper is barely wet in the mornings.
Another factor is she will not take a pacifier. She gags everytime I try to put it back in.
Also, look how quick she takes a nap in the am after she wakes up.
Yeah, I'm also noticing you are going 5 hours between feeds at one point there. It's not recommended to go more than 4 (and that's when they are STTN) because you want them to get their calories during the day.
Also, her awaketime during the day will gradually increase as the day goes on. So, for her to take a nap only 1 hour 15 min after waking is actually quite common. My DD's time awake goes from 1.5 hours to 2ish in the evening after her catnap.
I have a suggestion for the comfort feedings...this is just what worked for me. LO was waking up at midnight. For two nights, I just got her out of the bed, held and rocked her until she went back to sleep. On the third night she didn't wake up, then she started fully STTN. I couldn't let her CIO, I just comforted her rather than feeding and she dropped the habitual waking.
And to spinoff this, you could try slowly decreasing how long she eats over the course of a week. This will help shift her eating to the daytime only. But this is really contingent upon you adding another feeding into her daytime. I would be sure she is getting 5ish feeds in during the day. Or 4 feedings and a dream feed.
My baby never got the memo about napping. She dozes off while eating sometimes (just a short snooze) and during car rides or walks in the stroller if we go anywhere but that's it. I can never seem to get her to nap in a way that I am free to get some things done. If she snoozes in the car, I'm busy driving. If she snoozes while eating, she's on my lap and when I try to transfer her off she wakes up. AH!
How do you do it? What is your nap routine? Do you just sit them in a swing and they fall asleep themselves? Swaddle? Walk with them/rock them and then lay them down?

Georgia falls asleep on her own, but I like to just rock her sometimes. For morning naps she is out like a light, but in the afternoon I ssometimes swaddle and paci her. If she's ever refusing a nap, I put her in the Ergo and do stuff around the house, she either gets cranky then I get her out and she falls asleep, or she just falls asleep in the Ergo and I put her to bed.
DD naps after every bottle, about an hour later she goes down and sleeps. Sometimes I have to wake her up for her last bottle or she will get up but she usually takes her last bottle at 8:30 - 9:30 and will STTN.
I didn't think she would STTN with her last nap but she does!
