letting your lo cry it out?

if you plan on doing this when will or do you start? i a trying to get my lo to fall asleep on her own- i put her down drowsy but sometimes she will fall asleep other times she will cry- so i go in and either rub her tummy or soothe...but when will it be ok to let her cry just a little bit before i have to really go in there?? she is 4 months this wknd.

Re: letting your lo cry it out?

  • I think there is a difference between full on CIO and fuss it out.  With my 2 year old there are times where I have to leave my 3 month old to figure it out.  It's fussing and whining but usually after a few minutes she'll fall asleep.  If she is full on crying I go in there and hold her.  Only you know your LO, but they really don't get the idea that if I cry mom will come get me until later so use your best judgement.

  • Dr. Ferber and most pedis say not to do it until at leat 4 months, so I guess you are good if you are going that route. :)
  • I won't let Lila CIO until she's at least 6 months.  I agree with the PP, there's a difference between cry it out and fuss it out, and only you will know the difference with your baby.  I can easily tell when Lila is fussing versus crying.  If she's fussing, I give her a few minutes to figure it out.  If she calms down, I leave her be.  If she's still fussing, or it changes to crying, I go in immediately.
