Simple question: measuring cervix

This may be dumb, but I'll ask it anyway. I looked at other posts, and people just mentioned how long their cervix was, but never how it was measured. My doctor said she's going to measure my cervix next time for a baseline measurement.

How do they measure your cervix--vaginal ultrasound, putting a speculum in and measuring it inside, belly ultrasound, or some other way??

My doctor was able to measure mine with an abdominal u/s until about 24 weeks, then the babies got too big and they had to switch to a transvaginal u/s. My doctor also does internals and she can tell if there's been any change - so once she had the baseline she could determine if it was shortening or not by doing an internal exam.

I have them done weekly with the trans vaginal one. I usually get an ultrasound first and then switch to the trans one for correct measurement. Just for kicks, the tech measured it on a regular ultrasound and then compared it to the trans one. The regular one had my cervix much longer.

I have always had a transvaginal u/s. This is how my doctor found that I needed to be placed on bedrest three weeks ago- I am pregnant with triplets though.

Transvaginal. Doing an abdominal u/s with a full bladder to measure cervical length actually makes you cervix measure longer then it actually is. At 19 weeks I had mine measured via abdominal and it measured 4.2cm I immediately went to the bathroom and had it remeasured transvaginally and it only measured 2.8cm.
