We live in the snow capital of the world, so of course they start selling winter coats in July and they are sold out by end of September.
Reese is easy to shop for because she's a peanut and she's always one size behind. Ryan on the other hand is long and lean. To get things to fit his arms and legs I have to upsize A LOT. We are going to the outlets this weekend and I'd like to get him a fall fleece (which should be easy since he'll be wearing it in the next 6 weeks) and his winter coat (not as easy).
How much bigger to you buy their coats when you are buying them this far in advance? One size? Two sizes?
TIA
ETA: Ryan is currently 17 lbs and just over 29" long
Re: guestimating sizes for fall and winter coats
I have bought all Jack and Braley's fall stuff in 12-18 months.
Jack is big = almost 21 pounds, where as Braley is smaller at barely 18 pounds. But I keep them in the same size to make it simple and it has worked so far!
shorts = 6-12 months
pants = 12-18 months
short sleeved shirts = 9 month or 6-12 month
long sleeved shirts = 12 months
I was thinking 12-18 months for coats too. I guess if it came down to it and I had to buy the kid another coat in February it wouldn't kill me. I just worry about finding something then! Maybe I should get two? One 12-18 and one 18-24 just in case? I can always sell the second one next year if we don't need it...
I just buy a size up from where they are now. For Gwen last winter, I got a winter coat on clearance for this year in a 12-18 month size.
I got Nolan a 4T, and Linc a 18-24 month (he is little)
I do promise that as they get out of the infancy size, they will be a little easier to plan for clothingwise!
I would probably do the coat in 18 months!
I can't believe how big your boys are...reading that made me realize how much time has gone by and how quickly it's gone!
crud! I never even thought about this. Thank you!!
And this reminds me...I'm going to post a stupid question about coats and convertible carseats now
thanks!
I would maybe size up one size...coats seem to be kind of big anyways but you are putting them on over other clothing. Also, you may want to get a fleece in that size as well since you can't have the jacket on in a car seat (I got a 2 in one last year so that solved the problem.
Last year, DS was wearing 3-6 or 6 month in the summer, 6-9 mo in the early winter and 12 mo by March, I got him a 12 mo fleece and jacket and his one piece snow suit was 18 mo (he could probably wear it this year too but I already got him something
.
ETA: G never wore the actual jacket last year, only the fleece because it couldn't be worn in the carseat and he had a one piece for outside (which he used about 3 times).

Prime example last year Preston wore size 3t coat but was in 2t clothes, Jordana wore size 24 months but her coat was 3t, Brady was in size 12 months but his coat was size 24 months because but it was a little big on his I refused to buy another coat for him when I knew 18 months wouldn't fit long!
Will wore a fleece for most of the winter last year because we were rarely just hanging outside - he was usually in his carseat and then being transported quickly to somewhere inside! More often than not, he wore a fleece, and we just threw a blanket over him for the transport because it was easier than a coat.
That said, we did have some winter coats we got as gifts. I found that both of them (one was Baby Gap, one was Appaman) were quite roomy - as in they were designed to go over winter clothes. Will was 6 months in December, 9 months in March and even then he was swimming in his 6-12 month winter coats (while the rest of his 6-12 month clothes were starting to get snug).
So my gut says go with 12-18 months, and try them on if you can just to get a sense of how much room there is in there!
Niki - just wanted to be sure you saw the discussion that followed your post in mousey's post above! The gist: if you're going to put your twins into a stroller, it may be easiest to keep them in a fleece, hat and mittens and then outfit your stroller with toddler bundlemes. They are soooo cozy looking (I'm always jealous of Will when he's in his)! And you may be able to get away with skipping the coat step when putting them in the stroller!
I hope that helps!
thank you
