We just moved into a house that has well water, and the toilet seriously stinks on a daily basis. I mean, it's bad...Nasty men's room in a truck stop nasty. I can't imagine myself actually cleaning it daily, but it needs it that often. The only thing that has changed since we moved is the well water, which means that there isn't any chlorination in it, so I'm thinking that has to be the difference. I've kept our same cleaning schedule and supplies (7th Gen toilet cleaner), which has worked great for us in the other places we've lived, but I tried borax and vinegar too to see if it was any better (wasn't).
What else can I do? I'm to the point that tonight at the store I almost bought the chemical-heavy traditional toilet cleaner with bleach b/c I just can't stand it. I really don't want to do that b/c we also have septic, so our waste water doesn't get any treatment either. Any ideas?
Re: Just moved, have well water & stinky toilet...WWYD?
I miss my well water. It taste so pure and fresh. I moved to town and now I have city water - ick.
Enjoy the well water while you have it. It's wonderful.
Hmmm...It does get better for a brief time (1/2 a day or so) when I scrub the inside of the toilet bowl. That kinda rules out the wax ring and caulk, right?
I think maybe we might be onto something with the iron-loving bacteria though. I did a little googling, and the color can be anywhere from yellow to brown or orange. We do get a yellow slimy stuff in the bowl if I don't clean it for about 2 days, so that may be partially our source. Time for a water test again, I suppose. Might have to ask if that's something they'd pick up on the routine test though. Hmmm...this stinks. Literally!
