NBR: Book recommendations

So what is everyone reading right now?   I'm almost finished my book (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) and I'm trying to decide what to read next.   I requested The Help from my library but I'm still waiting for it to come in so I need to find something else to read.

  • I finished The Help on Friday and now I'm reading the second book in a YA fiction series. It's called Pretties. It's a pretty popular series. It's been a really good series so far.

I DLed a sample of divergent, and it gave me until her test...I gotta say, it didn't hook me. Does it get better? I love HG. I'm reading the help.

Very good series. Uglies, pretties, specials, extras!

  • I just finished The Sandalwood Tree by Elle Newmark and Smokin' Seventeen by Janet Evanovich.  Took all my library books back so I am going to have to either dive into my pdf files or something on my stack that I own myself.  Or the last 4 months of magazines that have been piling up.  Might read a Michael Connelly book since it's next to my bed.

YA novels are very often on the cutting edge of social matters and extrememly poignant. You shouldn't ever feel bad or ashamed of reading YA novels. Good books are not discriminatory upon age.

Yes, it gets better.  I stuck it out because a librarian friend of mine told me that it was the only book she'd read that could compare to the HG series.

I work/ed and am getting my MS in YA book publishing Yes

Someone teach me how to do multiple quotes so I can Yes everyone!

I'm a boring reader, I read mostly classics. Right now I am (rereading for the 1000th time) Nine Stories by J.D. Salinger. What can I say, it's my favorite book and I keep a copy in the diaper bag.

I finished Cutting For Stone a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it.  And last week I read The History of Love and LOVED it.  Now I'm reading the pioneer woman's book Black Heels to Tractor Wheels.  I've read most of it when she posted it to her blog but it's been a while, plus the whole first year of their marriage is in the book too, and I'm really enjoying it.

I have the newest Ann Patchett book on my nightstand which will probably be read next...

I listened to The History of Love on tape before reading it. Oops, so much of it is in the layout, but I also loved it. I'm currently reading Joy-fiction about communist China and I love it and The Continuum Concept about attachment parenting. Next on my list is Lacuna by Barbara kingsolver.

  • For you vampire academy lovers, richelle mead has a new book coming out tomorrow, I think it's dragons blood? Not sure.

  • in the last two weeks I have read-

The Giver. I hate this book, but I read it every few years to get my blood boiling again!! (anyone else ever read this? I would love to discuss it!!)

Between, Georgia- it's an easy read, but pretty good.

A book about Anne Frank- can't remember the title and I have a sleeping baby in my arms.

Sundays at Tiffany's- by Nicholas Sparks- again a pretty light read, but it's good.

So far every book has made me cry.

if anyone is looking for a good book 'The Red Tent is by far the best book I have ever read!!!

I love The Giver because it is so incredibly scary. I own it. Did you know there are sequels? I can't remember the names and I'm at work but you should check them out.

I did not enjoy The Red Tent. I'm not sure why really but I think it had to do with my own personal religious beliefs.

  • I just finished "Before I Go To Sleep" by SJ Watson. It was really good - sort of a thriller but not too dark.

Before that, I read "The Book of Negroes", which was excellent.

Right now I'm reading some boring baby stuff, but next up is "State of Wonder" by Ann Patchett.

The History of Love is one of my absolute favorites...one of those books you can read over and over again!

  • Some favorites are Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver, The Thirteenth Tale (can't remember the author), the Outlander series by Diana Gaboldon and the Amelia Peabody mystery series by Elizabeth Peters (Crocodile on the Sandbank is the 1st one).  I just finished the 2nd Hunger Games book and cant' wait for the finale and will read the next in the Alchemist series (YA) by Michael Scott as soon as I get it from the library.

  • I like anything by Margaret Atwood (oryx and crake, year of the flood, cat's eye), Wally Lamb (She's come undone, The Hour I first Believed), anything by Ann Marie MacDonald (Fall on your knees, the way the crow flies).

For lighter stuff anything by sofie kinsella (all the Shopaholic books, Remember Me, Undomestic Goddess) or Jennifer Weiner (best friends forever, goodnight nobody, little earthquakes) or Emily Giffin (Something Borrowed, Something Blue, Baby Proof, Love the One You're With and Heart of the Matter) oh and I've also just read Ellen Hildebrant's 'The Castaways" and would read more of her stuff too.
