still doesn't like tummy time

My DS is 3 months old today and he still HATES tummy time.  I have been reading how many of ya'lls LO's are lifting their head while on their tummy and moving around on their tummy but when I put my DS on his tummy he screams bloody murder!  He is barely lifting his head up while on his tummy but I 'm just not sure if thats from him being so upset.  It's not that he doesn't have good head/neck control at all, he actually has great control.  He loves to stand, play in his excersaucer/jumper, and sit bumbo.  It's just when he is on his tummy he literally wont do anything.  Should I be worried?

  • I don't think you need to be worried. DS still doesn't like it either but he has good upper body strength (he can pull himself up by pulling on my fingers). Now that he can roll over on to his belly, I am constantly having to roll him back on his back because he cries everytime he gets himself on his tummy.

  • DS is starting to hold up his head while on tummy much better, but he still hates tummy time after about 2 minutes. Or less.

I got him better used to it by propping him up on his boppy (a towel will work too) with his arms in front. I put him on the edge of the bed with me kneeling in front of him on the ground so he could see me well. Don't worry, I was right there and he wasn't that close to the edge. After that I slowly started intervals of taking away the boppy.

I think my DS isn't holding up his head as well as a lot of other LOs on here, but everyone works in their own time. Your LO will get it. Just keep giving him opportunities and distract him with toys if he starts to look worried.
  • I don't think you should be worried, but keep working at it.    My LO wasn't a big fan of tummy time. At first I would prop his upper body so his head & arms were higher up, like on an angle.  I would put a folded up towel under his chest but his legs were still on the floor if that makes sense.   He seemed to like that best and after he got used to tummy time I took away the towel.

  • i was just telling DH tonight that it doesn't look like DD will be rolling over anytime soon because she hates tummy time.  she freaks out after only a couple of minutes.  she also has good head control when sitting up but when on her tummy, she just lays there paralyzed in fear.  it's so sad!  i do everything i can to encourage her but nothing seems to work...so far.  hopefully one day she'll surprise me.

now, when she's on her back, she kind of stretches over like she's about to roll over but hasn't happened yet.

I love this idea!! K likes tumy time better than being on her back, but I am filing this away for future kids. We also put a mirror right under the front of the boppy. She LOVES looking at the pretty baby in the mirror!

    OP- I wouldn't worry though!
