Really, that made my ankle swollen?

Swollen ankles, an unfortunate part of being pregnant. I usually just remind myself all the discomfort will be well worth it in the end! I know it to be true, and I just try and adjust the best I can. Normally they don't swell up to big unless I've been walking around for a while.

Until tonight, when I realized within the hour I spent on the kitchen, working on dinner, putting clean dishes away and dirty ones in the washer, (And I wasn't even on my feet the entire time) my left ankle (It's the left one that swells particularly noticeably) was really swollen. I realized, oh lame, just being on my feet moving aimlessly about my kitchen for an hour makes them swell.

One of the midwives at my OB office told me that white grapefruit juice could help bring some of the swelling down, and even though the very idea of it kind of grosses me out,  I'm wondering if any of you ladies have tried it and if it helped at all?

Either way, I know it's worth it in the end, it's just uncomfortable for the now lol.

  • I haven't tried it, but I definitely will research it.  There are days where my feet are so swollen and my toes look like sausages, it is awful!

  • i haven't heard of that one.  can you soak in a tub or a pool?  i have been told this helps to redistribute the fluids in your body.

i haven't gotten swollen yet this time, hoping it stays away.  when i got swollen with DD it was the last few weeks and it was so uncomfortable.

  • I am feeling the same way this week with the swollen feet. I tried on my flats and yea they are tight, I am a teacher and going back to work in a few weeks and a little worried about what shoes I am going to wear since I have been in flip flops all summer. I am right with you with doing laundry cooking etc It feels like i ran a mile. I heard today that small container of warm water and baking soda works. I am going to be trying that, I will let you know. Any suggestions to this first timer would be greatly appreciated!
  • My feet are out of control today!! They look like pigs feet!! I have tiny size 4 (kids) 5 1/2 (womens) feet and the swelling makes them look so silly! blah, DH didn't put the ice maker lever down last time he took ice out, so I put bags of frozen corn on them after work!

  • I drink 2 bottles of Simply Grapefruit Juice every week and feel like it helps some. My ankles still get swollen, but I think they could be worse. I like grapefruit juice though, so I'd be drinking it either way (that's my latest fruit craving).

ETA: I also think it helps me eat less bad foods, etc. between meals. I'm not trying to diet by any means, but controlling my sudden desire to eat a tub of icing is a good thing. :)

I teach as well, so all I have been wearing are flips flops this summer. I can't fit into anything else now, so I will be wearing them to work! The counselor at school told me when she was pregnant she wore house shoes lol.

  • Was your dinner high in sodium?? That could have contributed too.

I feel like eating lots of watermelon helps reduce swelling.

Nope, they swelled up before I had even eaten dinner. I'm really careful about my sodium intake, so that didn't have anything to do with it, I just happened to be puttering around my tiny little kitchen for an hour and BAM swollen ankles.
