Parenting after a Loss

Car trips with LO

LO will be 2 months old on September 5th. DH wants to take him out to California for the weekend to see family. It's a four hour drive. When did you first take a car trip with LO and how far? I think it's too early.

Re: Car trips with LO

  • I took DS on a 4 hour trip when he was about 3 months old. My sister was driving, and she came to pick us up at 6 a.m.

After DS got up around 5ish to eat, I put him straight into his car seat in his jammies. We made a pit stop about 2 hours in, and I nursed him, changed his diaper, and got him dressed then. Other than that, he slept the entire way up.

I brought my pump, just in case he got hungry & we weren't at a point where we could stop. That came in handy on the way home. I nursed him  before we got in the car, but he was hungry half an hour later! We did have to make our pit stop earlier than we had planned because he decided to have a massive, smelly poop.

Note: this was a one day trip, so I didn't have to worry about him sleeping in a strange place or anything like that.

  • Seven hours when she was a month and a half old.

The trip home was fine, she slept the whole way.

The trip there was hell wrapped in a nightmare wrapped in torture wrapped in I almost said screw this and jumped from the moving vehicle somewhere in Indiana.

I shudder now even thinking about it. (She had a diaper blow out in bumper to bumper rush hour traffic, and then screamed the entire remaining six hours after we cleaned her up. :SCREAMED. ::shudder:::)

  • We took DS on a 6-hour trip at 4 weeks, and a 12-hour trip two weeks ago.  He did fine....the 6-hour trip turned into a 7.5 hour one b/c we had to stop more often, and the 12-hour drive turned into 14, but he slept for the most part.

I will say, though, that it was easier b/c he had someone in the back with him most of the time.  When he didn't, he was fussier, but it was still manageable.

  • We drove 28 hours with dd#1 when she was 16 days old.  She had been out of the NICU for two days when we left.  We were moving and had to get her to our new home ASAP because she had to have a follow up appt five days after she left the NICU.  Because we were moving and had to be out of our apartment, we weren't able to stay where we were and we had nowhere else to go except to where we were moving to.  I was a nervous wreck the entire time.  DD on the other hand, she did awesome.  We stopped every three hours so I could feed her and she slept most of the way.

BUT... at the time, this is how she rolled:

She didn't pass the carseat test in the NICU so we had to buy a car bed for her. It's basically a bassinet that straps into the car.  She had to lay down the entire drive.

  • We are currently in Maine for a week. DD just turned 5 weeks and we drove 9.5 hours from MD to ME. It went as well as it could of gone, she doesn't like to go to bed so lots of tears during the trip. I recommend going during your LOs best time:)

  • Around 3 months. 7+ hours with stops. It was great that trip.

Next trip she was nearly 5 months. That was hell. I will not take the child anywhere again until she's much much older at this point.

Wow. You have scared me. I think my biggest qualm at this moment is that we have had guests here (and still do) for the last 3 weeks or so. I am just worn out and ready to get into a routine with DS and have some alone time with just our little family. If we go to Cali it's just a week away, so only a week to rest from all the family all over DS all the time. We would be staying at DH's aunt and uncle's house, which is super huge and nice so we would have plenty of our own space, but that means another three days with family all over him. Plus his family is all about going out and doing things and I don't know how well DS would tolerate their days of go, go, go. I would also have to go upstairs to BF at their house...which is quite the walk.

ETA: As far as the car part, it's August...the drive is 90% desert with very, very few places to safely stop. It's hot. Even with the AC full blast. We would either have to leave really early or really late.

Wow...you are brave!!! But she looks so cute in that little thing. I had no idea such things existed.

  • We're increasing trip length gradually (mostly because we have no where to go right now that is very far away).

The longest she has gone is about 1 hr 20 mins (one way).  She does fine until the last 15 minutes then she's done with being in the bucket...

    Good luck!

I know, right!?!  Who knew such a thing existed!?  You won't find it 'on the market'.  We had to buy it from the hospital.

  • S hates the car seat so car rides anywhere are not pleasant unless she's sleeping! We have a 6 hour flight on Saturday though that I'm hoping goes smoothly!

  • At 2 months my parents and I took S on a 3 hour trip. He did okay. I sat in the back seat and played the entire time. One diaper blowout in the gas station parking lot (i'm tooking poop in his hair kind of blowout). I'm sure my dad and I got some looks trying to clean him up- grandma conveniently snuck off to the bathroom.

In a couple weeks DH and I are going on another 3 hour trip to visit DH's dying step-aunt. If she wasn't in horrible health there is no way we'd be going. Right now DS screams the entire time he is in the car. I plan on bringing a portable DVD player and lots of Sesame Street.  Mom of the Year Award is headed my way...

  • At 2 weeks old he went to my families house about 1 1/2 hour away and this past weekend we went to the beach about 2 1/2 hours away (I did this trip by myself).  You can do it.

I drove in the morning (his best time of the day).  I changed/feed him and hopped in the car, he slept most of the way.  On the way there I had to stop to feed/change him, so it was VERY helpful to have his diaper bag easy to grab.

  • DD: 6 wks.  12 hour drive.

DS: 3 wks.  10 hour drive. (Same drive as above, better weather.)

    DD#2: 10 wks. 12 hour drive.

  • We took DD to my family's beach house whenshe was 3w. It's about a 5.5 hr drive and she did great, but likes the car. We stopped twice each way to nurse. If you don't have one of those mirrors for the headrest behind DS I highly recommend it, you can check on him through the rearview or by turning around.

Yes I have one of those mirrors, but it's hard to see it it. I don't know if it's our car, his carseat, or the fact that he is still pretty tiny. I can see his face but not very clearly. I can only really see if his eyes are opened or closed.
