Dreft vs. Tide Free

What is everyone using?  Dreft is SO expensive!  My mom told me it is gentle, but also helps keep fire retardancy on baby clothing?  Anyone know if thats true?  It smells great, but I can't get over how much it is for such a little bottle.  What about you girls?

Re: Dreft vs. Tide Free

  • Tide Free (well we use All Free and Clear because it works and is less expensive than Tide).  Dreft does smell great, but the perfumes can be very irritating.

  • I think Dreft is a scam! We'll just use the regular Ecos free and clear we always use on LO's clothes and cloth diapers.

  • So a regular Free/Clear detergent will be OK?

  • Awesome question. I've been wondering myself!

  • I posted the same question a while back. For the most part people said they were going to use their regular detergent unless their baby was allergic/sensitive to it. Think about it, if your baby is allergic to Gain or whatever you normally use; then you would need to wash your clothes along with theirs in Dreft or another sensitive detergent. I had never thought of it that way until I posted my question. You will be handling your baby against your clothes that have been washed in your normal detergent and this could lead to allergies if your baby is indeed allergic/sensitive to your normal detergent.

While I love the smell of Dreft, I won't be shelling out that money for it unless I have to. Maybe someone will buy some as a shower gift, because I really do love the way it smells. However, I hope that I don't HAVE to use it. Something else to think about is that a little bit of it will go a long way. Someone also mentioned that Purex has a baby detergent that smells nice and Purex really works well to get clothes clean.

I will try to find a link to my previous thread if you'd like.

  • I plan on using Seventh Generation baby detg or something similiar.  I prefer scent-free and also we try to use household products that are not tested on animals - that rules out Dreft and Tide for us.

Never thought about it that way.  I mean in terms of her skin on my clothing.  I know its expensive!  And its little bottles, so they don't go far!  If you can find the link, that would be great

  • I think Dreft is a huge waste of money. It actually has more perfumes and dyes in it than Free & Clear detergents, so I don't understand how it can be so "gentle". My nephew has incredibly sensitive skin, and his doctor actually recommended switching from Dreft to a free & clear detergent. We've used All Free & Clear for all our clothes, including my daughters for years, and we've never had any problems.

  • I just use my regular detergent - neither of my kids have had skin issues.  Besides I love that fresh laundry smell.  ;)

  • I've heard that Dreft gets spit up stains out of clothing better than anything else.  Is this true?

  • I am using Free and Clear for the baby, right now I bought arm and hammer free and clear because it was on sale and I had a coupon. I don't see how Dreft is for sensitive skin when it has fragrance, enzymes, etc in it. I think it is a load of phooey. I will also add OxiClean to the wash to help get the stains out, and then dry in the sun if needed.

  • Use whatever you normally use for your detergent/fabric softener, why would you want to make more work for yourself...  If your baby is going to have a reaction to it (like some babies have reactions to different brands of diapers), they will..  I have extremely sensitive skin so eventually came to that conclusion with my own skin, even "dye and perfume free" and "Natural" laundry detergents can cause some of the biggest rashes for me.  A baby isn't going to be any different.  Here's the thing on the flame retardancy stuff - WHO puts their baby next to an open flame?  Besides that question comes the reality that whether you use Dreft or your regular detergent combo, the stuff washes off within 3-4 washes and it's not that healthy for babies anyway.

  • I have ridiculously sensitive skin, like to the point where I get itchy walking through the laundry detergent aisle at the supermarket (the Glade plug-ins do it to me too).  I make my own laundry detergent with absolutely no dyes or fragrances, and will use it for the baby as well.  Hopefully he doesn't inherit my sensitive skin.

We never used dreft. Now we use regular soap and DD doesn't have a problem.

  • Way back when Dreft was the only "gentle" detergent.  We use a generic free and clear because our son has very sensitive skin and even the perfumes in Dreft weren't good.

  • The only reason I'm using Dreft is because my brother and SIL gave us a huge box as a gift.  SIL works for P&G so I'm assuming she got it for pretty cheap.  When it runs out we intend to use our regular detergent.  If she hadn't been kind enough to gift it to us we would have just used our regular detergent.  I'm testing out Rockin Green for my CDs though.  Smile

  • I do not have sensitive skin but Seventh Generation and other detergents like Seventh Generation, break me out in a rash. Plus, none of them get my clothes truly clean. I use Gain for myself now but for baby I'm going to try Tide free and clear.

My Dad has super sensitive skin and Dreft is the only thing my Mom can use on his clothes that doesn't break him out. But she only has to use it on his undershirts and underwear.

  • This maybe a silly question to add, but does dreft even make a energy efficient type? I don't recall ever seeing one, I only use that type because My washer and dyer were pretty expensive and I won't risk breaking it. We plan on using tide free and clear or wisk free and clear.

  • We are a tide family! Right now we use regular tide but I am planning on switching to the free and clear in about a month. Almost everyone in my family has some kind of skin issues come winter so I only use free and clear everything from October to April. I am sure I will continue to use it until I know the baby's skin can handle regular tide again.
  • My oldest child has eczema so I have had to use only free and clear detergent for years.  I mostly use All Free and Clear or Purex Free and Clear if I can find it.  I used Dreft when he was an infant and to be honest didn't feel it was worth the cost after trying some of the other brands.  It has been my experience that any Free and Clear detergent is about the same.  You are mostly just paying for the name.
