...in my neighborhood! I wish I could tell you how many times DH has had to help people catch their dogs that are off the leash and running around. When I was newly pregnant and we were just moving in, I came downstairs to find a strange dog IN MY KITCHEN, we hadn't closed the door leading to the garage all the way and it nudged it's way in the door. Since then, we see at least 5 dogs off their leash per week, all running around, some nice, others not so much. We've called animal control on a couple that we've seen multiple times, but somehow, things don't change! We had dogs growing up, I realize that stuff happens and dogs get loose sometimes, but it just seems like in our neighborhood, it happens way more than it should.
Yesterday, I saw a woman carrying a baby in the park area behind our house, and a HUGE dog ran up to her and started jumping all over her and yipping at the baby...she was literally kicking it to get it off of her! I was trying to figure out how I could help since I had DS in my arms, when another neighbor saw and started yelling at the dog and chased it away. But that's seriously been one of my biggest nightmares since moving here; that somehow I'd be out with DS and one of those darn dogs would come up and start jumping!
Sorry, just went to put the trash can out at the curb and saw yet another dog wandering around off a leash, with no owner in sight, and needed somewhere to vent this. I wish that the people in our neighborhood would remember that there are TONS of families and kids around and that they need to figure out a way to keep their pets on their own property.
Re: SOOO frustrated with the dog owners... (vent)
Do you live in my neighborhood?!?!? I actually am a dog owner, and we ALWAYS have our dog on leash and always pick up his poop. Furthermore, we NEVER allow him in our backyard without us being there so that he won't bark. The houses in our neighborhood are SO close together, when a dog barks, it echos between the houses and is really loud. We have an ongoing battle with our neighbors leaving their dogs out and barking (they have three dogs and a doggie door). The worst was when LO was 4 days old, we were sleep deprived and they were barking up a storm at midnight!
I don't understand why people are so irresponsible with their dogs, and I totally feel your pain.... I could vent for hours about this - thanks for the opportunity
Good luck with your situation, some people in my neighborhood carry bats (I'm seriously not kidding) with them when they walk for that very reason!
That is scary! Our neighborhood is ok in that sense, but when I was about 9 weeks pregnant I was running with my dog (on a leash). She's an Italian Greyhound, so pretty small and meek. Our neighborhood is a bunch of cul-de-sacs, and it's great to go running a long distance while staying relatively close to home.
One time I went down a cul-de-sac I hadn't gone down before and on the way back out I noticed my dog was tucking her tail under and running faster than usual. I looked back and there was a big black collarless dog running after us. I knew you're not supposed to run from a dog, but I was already running, and my instinct was definitely not to stop and let the dog catch up, although in hindsight that probably would have been good to stop and yell. I didn't make eye contact and kind of prayed and he stopped following us halfway down the block.
I haven't gone back down that street since, but this scares me - if it happens when I'm with DS, it would be so much worse. Of course, then that dog would be dealing with my new mama bear self, so things may be different.
