Crouse Irving Hospital...

Can anyone tell me about their L&D and what your experience was like? I don't plan on taking a tour this time because we live an hour north. Thanks!!

Re: Crouse Irving Hospital...

  • I, personally, do not have any birthing experience at Crouse, but I have rotated through their L&D floor during my clinical experience (working toward my RN).

Personally, I prefer St. Joe's to Crouse.  I think mainly because I do/have worked at Crouse and would prefer to keep work and home life seperate.  I would never want to be a patient at a place where I work.  May sound a little weird, but that's just me.  I also feel like the staff at St. Joe's are... for lack of a better word... more caring.

That said, Crouse does have one of the most technologically advanced and modern facilities.  Their rooms have been recently renovated and everything is both very visually appealing (hardwood floors, almost all medical equipment hidden behind pictures... looks like a hotel room almost)... and technically sound.  Everything you could possibly need, from the most simple birth to the most complicated delivery, will be within arm's reach for your doctor/nursing staff.  They also have an amazing NICU right upstairs... so, God forbid your baby should have any complications, they will be in the best hands.  From my experience, some of the nurses and other staff can be a little... rough around the edges.  They really know their stuff, which is wonderful... but they aren't exactly the most tender people which can be frustrating to families during this emotional time.

So... in a nutshell... St. Joe's= warm & fuzzy, kind, caring staff.  Crouse= top of the line medical care, but maybe not always the warmest welcome.   HTH

  • I was in L&D for 3 1/2 days and in mother-baby for 3. I loved crouse. I had one bad nurse, but everyone else was amazing. Don't be afraid to wander, either. I was in labor forever and thought I was confined to my room. We actually had a L&D nurse who came to see us after Ben was born. And I knew the head nurse of downstairs, so that helped. But I liked it. Staff was good, facilities were great.

  • I just delivered my LO at Crouse Memorial Day weekend! Overall, I thought my experience there was just fine - nothing specific to rave about, but when I have my next LO, I will go back there again.

    The Pros:

Their NICU, god forbid you need it, is state of the art.

    The rooms are pretty updated/modern.

Babys dad can room-in with you if you have a private room or if you have a double without a roommate (this is what I had)... with the roommates, they try not to give you a roommate unless they are completely booked, and even then, they'll try to bring in the roommate right around the time you are being discharged (I did not have to have a roommate).

    The Cons:

Other than my nurse who I had in L&D - who was awesome - I was not a fan of the nursing staff on the post-delivery floor..... there were a few who were okay, but then there were a few (notably the nurse who saw us RIGHT after LO was born at 2AM when we were first brought upstairs) that I just did not care for....

The food -I was ALWAYS hungry.... the meals are pretty meager.

The Lactation Consultant - she stopped by only once during my stay, didnt provide any real help, and the one time I called, I really just felt like I was burdening her with my questions.

  • I delivered my oldest there 6.5 years ago.  I was very happy with the delivery and the recovery, although to be honest I don't remember a huge amount...I think I blocked out the trauma.

Mike was big (9lb 7oz) and was making some moaning sounds right after delivery.  They took him to the NICU for a thorough exam and it turned out he broke his collar bone on the way out.  Once they cleared him they brought him back and everything went smoothly after that.  (I just had to pin his little arm to mimic a sling for a few weeks until it healed.)  I do have to say, I was very happy that we chose a hospital with a great NICU.

  • DS was born there 5 weeks ago. Like pp, I also did a nursing rotation at Crouse, but I also work there too. L&D was great. I had a c-section and was really nervous. The staff was great. Post partum was good. All my nurses knew that I was an employee, so I don't know if that changed how my care was, but I did have the same nurses more than once during my 3 night stay which was good. They were great with handling me medically (pain meds, incision and bleeding assessments).

The rooms are nice and comfy. I thought the food was good, although I agree the portions were small. There are a bunch of restaurants and take out places a block from the hospital, so I was never hungry. Also, my visitors were never kicked out after visiting hours were over.
