Share your thawing wedding cake tips - NBR

So our first wedding anniversary is this coming Sunday and I want to have our delicious wedding cake. There are so many ways and days/hours to defrost the cake online I was hoping you ladies will share with me some of your tips. Thank you!

We had sooo much cake left over most of it went to waste :( There really was no need to have 4 layers of actual cake, we should have gone with the fakeout but oh well, it was pretty. So we did have some the day after before we left for the honeymoon but I saved the top layer. Cannot wait to see it and eat some (and break my diet)

     And here it is

  • We just pulled ours out and let it thaw during a four hour car ride. Lol. We had gone home that weekend for a friends wedding and our anniversary was on Sunday. We happened to leave the cake in his mom's chest freezer and just grabbed it before we headed home Sunday. It was freaking delicious and made me wish we could have saved more than just the top, but our cake fell during the reception. Thankfully the DJ caught it so it was edible, just not pretty.

Oh no! It fell? Please do share the story. And 4 hours was enough? I read someplace to leave it in the fridge for 4 days!

  • Lol. Yes, it fell! DH's aunt made the cake and assembled it right before the reception. We're not sure if it had to do with the supports or the unusual humidity in the end of Sept, or both, but it gradually started leaning to one side (you can see it in pictures, it's kind of funny) until the bottom layer finally gave out. I didn't even see it (all the mingling) until I heard gasps and ahhhs! Next thing I know our DJ and my best friend's husband each have a hand on the cake holding it up! The top layer was whole so we were able to save it, and the two middle layers got cut in half. To "cut the cake," we only were able to cut into the bottom layer. Didn't look as good in pictures but definitely made for a good story. And now my husband and my friend's husband are the best of friends and they hadn't met until that day! Lol. And yes, the four hours did it. And it was a thick layer too. If memory serves, I believe there were four layers of cake to each tier.

I wish we could have done this, but we left for our honeymoon immediately after our wedding. My parents seal-a-mealed a piece and froze the top layer and both came out tasting freezer-burnt. We had gotten our cake from Albertson's and just ordered a single layer cake that was the same as our wedding cake. It was sooo yummy :)

  • The idea of year-old wedding cakes gives me the willies.

We'll buy a top tier sized cake fresh for our anniversary.

...but you asked for advice, so I imagine let it thaw in the fridge so it doesn't stale.

Pretty sure this is what we did,   I remember it tasted pretty good (not as good as the wedding day, but not bad!)

I took the opportunity to shove it in DH's face since we didnt on our wedding day.
