Talk to me about making baby food....

I have recently started doing some research on making vs buying baby food and have lots of information for both sides, and am really thinking about making. I know it's a little far off now, but I want to start getting information together so I can be ready when the time comes.
Anyone have any tips that really worked for you that I won't find in articles or websites?
Costwise, do you find it to be cheaper to make baby food compared to buying it?
We have a food processor, so how much time a week would you said you spend making/storing the food. ( I will be home until Xander is 7 months so this is in no way a factor, I'm just curious :) ).

Thanks in advance.

  • We aren't starting until 6 months, which is still 2.5 months away, so any mom's with an older LO that made baby food, this is really to you as I realize most people havn't started considering baby food yet hah.

  • We're planning to do Baby-Led Weaning.  It'd be way cheaper than buying baby food, since you just feed table foods that the family is already eating anyway.  I'd imagine that making your own purees would also be less expensive than buying baby food.

  • I'm making LO's food - first I think it's going to be way more cost efficent. Second I know what she's eating, at all times, which makes me very happy.

I've started making and freezing food now (see post below) and honestly it was a really simple and easy process. I just steamed her food, pureed it in a food processor and put it in ice cube trays to freeze. Once frozen I took the food out of the tray and put them into ziplock baggies. It was not a big deal and the clean up was really easy. I actually had a lot of fun doing this.

  • We'll be making our own beginning at or after 6 months as well. A gf of mine made her son's food and passed along these tips: you can buy the bigger bag of frozen veggies that steam in the bag, steam them in the micro, then puree in the blender; she found the blender to give a smoother more consistent texture than the food processer; she made fresh for the next 2-3 days at a time but didn't freeze, her LO weirdly rejected the frozen - she noticed maybe a slight taste difference but nothing significant...just knew he refused to eat it.

  • We are making our baby food. I just feel better about buying organics, steaming, and pureeing than I do buying jarred foods. I don't want to pay $.88 for half of a $.40 sweet potato either, KWIM?

Check my blog for baby food recipes including when to start certain foods. FWIW - I'd start with green veggies (sweeten with minimal apple if needed) and move up through the oranges, yellows, and on to fruit from there.

This exactly. Why buy pureed banana when the real thing comes so perfectly packaged already? And LO will have fun learning to hold it and gnaw on it. I'm looking forward to when that step happens, even though I know it will be super messy!
