Bathroom remodel ? pip

So I'm not exaggerating we could win one of those "world's ugliest bathroom" contests. (When you look at the tile pic keep in mind the bathroom has pearlized pink tiles 3/4 way up the walls and gold fixtures) It's the only room we haven't touched since we moved in. I always thought we would get rid of our shower tiles but now that I look at them, I think with a simple clean look in the rest of the room, I might like to keep them. The tiles & our tub are still in good shape.

Check out the pic. Tiles... unique/keep 'em? or Fug- demo them?

  • hmmm... they are pretty outdated looking so I would get rid of 'em, unless cost is a big issue. I mean, if you're gonna gut it you might as well do it all. They could easily be hidden by a shower curtain though.

  • How long do you plan to be in the house? Future buyers may not have the same reaction to them as you. They're definitely NMS, so I'd have them out in a heartbeat.

I was going to say this too- if you plan on selling in the next 10 years (or before you would remodel again) then I would definitely get rid of them. If I was a buyer I would think to myself "why did they remodel the entire bathroom, but keep the fug tile?!"

  • If you're worried about the cost of retiling the shower, you could do something like a Sterling tub system. It installs right to the studs, and was only $400. It's so easy to clean, too.
  • I'd have to see a detailed shot to be sure, but I totally think you could rock those tiles - but I love mid-century modern design. Another thing to consider is how it fits with the rest of your house. Maybe take a look at pinterest for "vintage bathroom tile"

That said - we have a Sterling tub system (the previous owners put it in) and it's pretty nice. I can't say enough how awesome it is to NOT have a tiled tub - cleaning is SOOOO much easier. I'm not sure if I would have gone that route because it's sorta noticable that it's a "cover-up" type tub...but no one sees it. Ours is very deep so if I ever wanted to take a nice bath it was be great. **But whoever installed ours screwed it up and it sweaks pretty bad when your shifting your weight - so if you go that route, make sure your guy knows what he is doing.

So my vote would be to change it out. It will feel so bright and clean when you are showering.

Our bathroom needs a little "lipstick" with some paint and fixtures. They picked the cheapest crap - gold and silver combo...UGH! I need to add some art and a valance and all the little crap that adds up quick.

  • i like the tiles... but not covering the entire wall. maybe the 4 tiles creating that flower pattern together scattered around the walls with a neutral tile in between however i know replacing some of the tile would probably be more of a hassle

  • See~ I'm in the minority- as long as we can do the 3 S's in a bathroom- I dont get all worked up if its updated...I actually like the tiles- I think you could rock them too...

but seeing as I am not most people- and most of the opinions you got was to change them- if you are thinking of selling soon( 5-7 years) then you should just update the whole thing...

  • I think they are funky!  If you tone everything else down, I think they could be a real focal point.

  • I think they're kinda cool, if they go with the rest of the style of the house. With updated fixtures and the like you could totally rock them.

However, I agree with everyone else. If you're going to sell anytime soon I'd probably just update all of it.

  • I like them too but agree with PP that if you were to sell, a more neutral bathroom would be better.
