Anyone have blackout shades?

I want to get a blackout shade for LO's room, as he wakes up as soon as it gets light in his room (6am), but I don't even know what they look like.  Is it a rolling shade?  Can I get rid of the ugly blinds that are in there now? Do I have to go to a specialty store, or will home depot carry 'em?

Bonus points if you provide a PIP.

Re: Anyone have blackout shades?

  • I made some curtains with black out lining.  I got the lining at fabricland, it's called "dark out", you can get "dim out" too, but as its name implies it's not as dark.

I have no idea about the shades though.

  • We went with the Levolor Cellular Shades with room darkening option available from Home Depot.  They are custom-made, look great and really block out the light.  Plus they look like a normal shade which was a huge selling point for us.  I would recommend the cordless option as you can operated one handed (I lower them as we enter the room)

  • I got some at Target that are in Cayden's room.  I was able to find regular ones that match his room colors too.  They are just regular curtains but they are made out of a certain fabric that keeps light out and also keeps it cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.  Supposedly they also help to keep sound out as well.  The ones I got cost about 20 bucks total :)

  • See, we already have nice white curtains in the the room, with those horrible, white blinds underneath (I know they have a name, but for the life of me, I can't come up with them - you know the ones with the cord on one end for up and down, and the poley thing on the other to twist them up or down).  I'd like to get rid of the blinds, and replace them with a blackout one of some sort.

Thanks!  Can I ask how much you spent on the one window?

  • I ordered some blackout lined curtains from Pottery Barn Kids

I got them in khaki, not the best match with the nursery but I needed them quickly.  And they are so worth it, definitely has helped in the mornings and for naps.

His three plus my one; we are all excited to welcome a little one!

We got these as well and they work great. (I also have brown darkening curtains I pull in front of them as well to take care of the tiny cracks of light that filter through on the sides

I have these too!! I LOVE them! They run about 50$ for the cheapest ones, which is what I have, and they work really well!!! We have them in every room upstairs and it's like night all the time up there. Plus, they are energy efficient! And cordless like pp mentioned. My cousins little girl got caught in a blind cord and nearly died, I will not have cords anywhere in my house!

  • I have them in our room and we co-sleep. I got the roller kind from sears, so I could still have pretty curtains and roll the blind up during the day and it hides under them. It was a custom order.

  • I tried the curtains and the cheap shades. Eventually I converted all of my windows using Smith+Noble. $$, but worth it.

  • We spend about $500 on shades for 5 windows.  This is a bit deceptive though as we are in an old 1920's house and have super weird shaped windows so they we are bit more money.  Gotta love the long skinny windows :) That being said it was totally worth it as I love the shades and we won't ever need to replace them.  I have also noticed that they dampen noise in addition to insulating the room better.  They regulate the heat from the direct sun very well which was another problem we had.
