do you carry scissors in your car?

My mom just told me about flash flooding in pittsburgh and was really upset by the deaths.  After hearing about it my grandma has decided that we need the tool to break your window and a pair of scissors that if something were to ever happen we could cut the kids from the carseat.

This has never occured to me to have in the car but I guess it makes sense.  In an emergency I might not be able to get the carseat straps undone. Just something to think about putting in your car.

Re: do you carry scissors in your car?

  • They make a tool that you can keep in your glove compartment that has a sharp point for breaking your window and a blade for cutting the seat belt.

  • thank you that must be the thing my mom is talking about
  • My mom gave me a center punch to break windows, and I had it in my car (not sure if it is buried in the glove compartment).  And she had this tool that had a center punch and a blade on it (like a huge version of an envelope opener) that served to break windows and slash seatbelts.
  • whoops/ eating breakfast and typing - so ditto what you ladies said :)
  • I don't keep scissors in my car because I am afraid the kids would somehow get their hands on them, plus they would need to be pretty heavy duty to cut through a carseat strap.  I would keep something like that took in my car though, seems way safe than a heavy duty pair of scissors.
  • I just realized that I lied there.  I do indeed keep scissors in my car, I keep a small pair of kids safety scissors in my glove box for cutting coupons out of my entertainment book!
  • I do, little bitty things for cutting coupons or tags off something new that R can't wait for.

The window punch and seat belt cutter would be great if you need to help someone else. If your in an accident and hurt, you aren't going to be cutting your seat belt. If your not hurt, then you would most likely be able to undo your belt or your childs car seat.

EMS will be taking the whole car seat out, not just your child. Now, if you came upon an accident that had someone trapped....yeah, the tool would be handy.

In a flood....you wouldn't be safe getting out and trying to swim through the water with your child. There didn't seem to be much that could be done in the PA flood. It is a freak thing that is very sad.

  • We have a local magazine for parents here that recently had a story that caught my attention.  A dad was out running errands with his two kids.  You know how we use the LATCH system now in many cars and the seat belt isn't being used?  Well, the little girl (I think she was 3 or 4) had wrapped the seat belt around her arm and neck.  The dad tried to unwrap it but it wouldn't release at all so he couldn't get any slack and she started to lose consciousness.  This all happened in a parking lot, and luckily someone that heard him screaming did have scissors and cut the seat belt.  The article was recommending that parents buckle the seatbelt behind the car seat so the kids can't play with it.

Thanks.  I was trying to think of a situation where a seat belt cutter would be useful, this is a good one!

After you buckle it, pull it out until it catches and then only goes back in.  That way, there is no way the kids can pull it out and play with it.
