Pregnant after IF

Annoyed and frustrated- 3hGTT VENT (questions too!)

So I did the 3hr GTT test on Friday and was told I'd get the results today.  After trying to get in touch with my doctors office numerous times today and them calling and leaving messages (just saying to call them back) I finally get a hold of someone and this is how the conversation goes:

Nurse: Hi, This is megan right? (Me- yes) Well I was just calling to tell you that you've been authorized to take two diabetes education classes at so and so's office with so and so.  So just call them and set up your appointment ok?  Your records have already been transferred.

Me: So wait, I'm assuming that means I failed the test right?

Nurse: Oh, well I'm assuming so since you have to take the classes.  Let me look. yes, it looks like some of your levels were slightly elevated.

Me: Ok so what do I do?

Nurse- re-explains calling the other place... bye!

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  First of all, how are you going to tell an emotional pregnant lady that she has gestational diabetes by NOT actually telling her that and then give her NO information about what to expect??!  Second, I called and made my first appt and the lady said that I'd have to get a growth scan since my last one was at 21 weeks (for a/s) and then I'd have my appointment and to expect biweekly or weekly appointments depending on how well I stick to the diet.  Ummmmm... didn't know that but ok.  And no I have no idea if I'm supposed to start eating a certain way until next Monday or just eat like I have been until then.  I'm BEYOND frustrated and feel like I have NO information:(  DH is too busy at work to really talk to me about it too so of course I'm all emotional about that:(  UGHHH

SOOOOOOO... anyone with GD wanna tell me what to expect?  Anyone have sample diets they go off of?  I think I'd rather start now instead of waiting another full week.

Sorry for the long vent but I'm seriously annoyed:(

  • :(  I'm so sorry you had to deal with that.  I take my first GD test tomorrow and I'm nervous.  I do know that my SIL had it and she said the diet wasn't that bad at all and at times she had trouble eating enough food!

Hey girl, sorry about GD :(  I was diagnosed about a month ago now and had to wait a week to meet with the dietician. I looked online at meals, and also lurked a TON on the high risk board and got a lot of ideas from them.

It hasn't been too bad, the hardest part is not eating the things I have cravings for! I was put on insulin 2 weeks ago because my fasting numbers were not changing with the diet, but other than that things have been ok.

Thanks for responding, I was actually going to PM you tonight to talk to you more about it.  Can you tell me what the first appointment entails and what you have to do at each appt after that?  Do you have to check your insulin levels (before getting put on insulin)?  I'm just clueless about this stuff:(  Off to lurk on the high risk boards!  Thanks for the info:)

  • Im sorry Megan, what a rough day. Well i didnt get that far yet but I was seeing a nutritionist for my pcos and she put me on a diabetic diet (basically) since we assumed i'd have GD. The meal plan was more about balancing proteins with carbs and making good carb choices. Whole grains instead of white. She told me not to eat anything that melts in your mouth (bananas, oatmeal, mashed potatoes, etc). If you are going to have a sweet treat like ice cream or a cookie do it right after dinner because it will help it metabolize better. It is a high protein, low sugar and low carb diet. Incorporate more vegetables and fruits (certain ones are limited) as snacks mid day, have smaller portions, drink lots of water. Hope this helps you maybe prepare for whatever meal plan they will have. Good luck sweetie!

  • Sounds like somebody dropped the balI!

I would call back and ask to speak the the nurse and explain you feel frustrated and talk about getting a glucometer to check your sugars like Papps said. At least you can keep track while you wait for your appointment. Waiting a week to get in with a dietician seems like forever but that's how it works around here too.

    Good luck with everything!

  • Don't have experience with GD (yet), but just wanted to give you a virtual hug. I think they handled delivering the news in a very sh!tty manner.

  • Thanks everyone, I agree that someone definitely dropped the ball.  I've shed my tears about it tonight but I'm trying to look on the bright side the diagnosis  (still hard to see it):P  And Jez, Papps... thanks for diet suggestions.

I'll be seeing my OB tomorrow for my regular appt and I plan to talk with her in depth about everything.  Maybe she can give me the stuff I need then?
