Anyone have a uterine polyp? Tell me more

I was recently dx with a uterine polyp.  I'm scheduled to have it taken out on Wednesday.  If you had a polyp removed, did anything about your fertility improve after it was removed?  Any complications?

Re: Anyone have a uterine polyp? Tell me more

  • I had an operative hysteroscopy done a couple years back where they found and removed a uterine polyp.  At the time, my Dr. was trying to rule out reasons for my multiple losses.  It didn't improve anything with my fertility as conceiving has never been a problem for us.  There weren't any complications and since I was put under the whole thing was easy peasy.

  • My RE found a few (2 I think?) polyps in my uterus when he did my lap. They were removed but unfortunately it didn't seem to make a difference in the 3 IUIs I had afterwards.

I didn't have any complications from the lap.

  • I had one removed 6-7 weeks ago.  The jury is still out about it improving my fertility.  My problem is a blocked fallopian tube, so I was getting ready to start IVF (was finishing up my BCPs), and they discovered my polyp during my saline sonogram. The Dr. said to remove it and do a D&C to clean everything up, because it might keep the embryo from sticking, which would be a waste of my IVF time and money.  The procedure was really easy and I was back at work the next day, just still a little tired from the anesthesia.

I had my period that week, since I stopped the BCPs, and was told to wait one more natural cycle and get my period again, so that the lining of my uterus could heal.  I am on my second week of BCPs for the 2nd time, and am scheduled to go in for another saline sonogram on Aug. 31st, at which time I hope to start stimming.

So far, the biggest pain about this has been the major delay to my cycle.  After typing all this, I realize you didn't mention whether you are doing IVF or not, so if not, I really can't say how it will affect your fertility.  Best of luck to you, whichever route you are pursuing!

  • Thanks.  I've read reports online that say that fertility improved with some patients, but I wasn't sure if that was reality or not.

My doctor just rescheduled the hysteroscopy for tomorrow.  I hope that it's not because he thinks that it's something malignant.

  • Don't worry. The procedure will be somewaht uncomfrotable. He may have just rescheduled for his own scheduling needs. Can't really determine if it may be malignant until it is removed.

Had one removed in June. Can't say if it improved my fertility but hoping it did in 2ww now.

  • I had 3 uterine polyps removed a few weeks ago.  It was outpatient (D&C) and they just gave me some drugs to make me feel loopy and a pain killers.  I had no comlications, and really no pain at all after the procedure, but I was totally messed up from the loopy pills and vomiting from the pain pills!  The drugs were WAY worse than the actual procedure for me.

My doc. also said that he sees an increase in the success rate of IVFs right after such a procedure.  I know a lot of REs make people wait a cycle afterward, but my doc seems to think it will be better to go ahead right away.  We'll be starting stims next week!

    Good luck!
