Not interested in solid foods at 6 months?

Madilynn is just not interested in purees.  We introduced them to her about three weeks ago, and she just has no interest.  She will eat some if we can get some in her mouth, but most of the time she just looks at me like I'm crazy when I offer them to her.  We started purees with Reagan at 4 months, so by 6 months she was eating like a champ. (I know I shouldn't compare the girls...)  Is this something I should be concerned about, or will she come around eventually?

  • Grier has no interest either. She showed signs of being ready, but when we've tried, she acts like we're feeding her poison. I'm going to try again in a week or so. I'm not concerned at all. Some babies actually skip purees altogether!

  • Maybe try giving her some finger foods so she can explore and feed herself? My DD is totally not interested in someone else doing the feeding. We did BLW with her so she never got used to it, but even in the beginning she wasn't interested if I had something to spoon feed her.

It is alright to skip purees, they don't actually need it, and some babies just do better when they get to feed themselves.

  • I hadn't even though about skipping purees!  Maybe I will try some finger foods with her.  Thanks for the idea!

  • DS is 7 months.  We started purees at about 5.5 months.  He took about 3-4 weeks before he opened his mouth consistenly for food.  We just tried everyday.  In the last week or so he has started actually eating!

So, if you decide to stick with purees, just keep trying.  It takes a while for some babies.

I'm glad to know that persistence pays off!

  • We have the same exact situation here. Henry was really into solids and Eleanor just isn't. I'm nit going to worry about it until our pedi tells me to. :) I just keep offering once a day.
  • Ryan was the same way. I just kept feeding his sister and once I week I'd sit him in his high chair and try again. Eventually he showed interest and started eating. I'd say it's just fine. She's only 6 months old, which is when you "should" start solids, so she has plenty of time. GL!
