Nap help please

When it's nap time and we go to rock him or bounce him to sleep (he doesn't go to sleep on his own and we are fine with that right now) he cries himself to sleep in our arms.  Sometimes it takes just a few minutes and he's out.  Other times, it can take a half hour or more to get him to sleep.  I hate seeing him cry himself to sleep.

Anyone successfully overcome this? Other suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Nap help please

  • When DS does that it means we have missed his tired signs and has gone past the point of no return.  I try to get him to sleep when he starts rubbing his eyes and lets out the first yawn and maybe a slight fuss.  If we wait then he becomes overtired and I have to shush him and bounce-rock him while he screams bloody murder and then passes out from exhaustion.  It is like us, I find it harder to sleep if I am overtired.  His crying is his way of telling us he is tired and can't get to sleep.  I do recommend The Baby Whisperer books.  Once you get him into a routine and catch on to his signals, life is a whole lot easier.

He cries even if I catch him at the first yawn, albeit less, but he still cries.  I look for his cues and try to get him down right away.  I am sure I miss them sometimes, but for the most part I think I'm on it.  I guess I'll just keep trying.

  • DS used to always cry himself to sleep unless I nursed him down.  I would be bouncing him in the ergo with a hairdryer on and he would still cry for 20-30 minutes.  I totally had forgotten how exhausting it was, because DD just calmly drifts off to sleep in her swing.  All I have to do his stroke her head (if even that).  Some babies just need to expel energy before going to sleep and it sucks.  No one with easy babies will ever be able to relate, though they will give you suggestions:)

Will he take a paci?  DS wouldn't.  He would just scream and scream until he passed out and then he would wake if I put him down.  It got better over time, but he STILL fusses before going to sleep sometimes.

No, he won't take a paci.  Most of the time, it's only for 5-10 minutes, so it's not awful.  I just feel bad for him and wish there was something I could do.  Hopefully he will grow out of it.
