So I didn't hear much from the BF board when I posted something so i'm hoping you guys can help. DS just turned 10 months and ive been EBF. Lately hes not been having as many wet diapers and has been extra cranky. I read that babies this age do not tend to wean themselves but my son will literaly scream and cry during most feedings. I do not want to give up nursing so I went on a two week nursing vacation- pumping after feedings, nursing or pumping every 2 hours and I took fenugreek. I can't seem to get my supply up as I am still only able to pump an ounce or two at most. My son recently got 4 teeth in one month and I think this contributed to my supply tanking. In the evening i've been supplimenting after nursing with a few ounces of formula or my milk. This has not seemed to help as he still is having maybe one wet diaper a day. He loves table food but I know that we still have a couple months till its his primary source of nutrition. My freezer supply of 700 oz got lost due to our freezer going out so im down to about 100 oz. What would you do in this situation? Help is much much appreciated as this issue has given me much anxiety.
Re: BF Help.. long
I think the weaning process can happen gradually and naturally like your are experincing. But it is not normal to only have one wet diaper a day. I would make an appointment to bring your son in tomorrow. In the mean time I would supplement after every feeding and pump after every feeding too to stimulate milk production. I notice a huge drop in supply around 10 months too. I think it is just a normal part of the weaning process, but my daughter still has wet diapers about 6-7 times a day. You are lucky your baby will take formula, mine will not! What's most important is that your baby gets the formula/breastmilk he needs to grow properly. Call first thing in the morning, or if you're really worried call the on call doc today! That is what they are on call for. Good luck, keep us posted!
I gave up BFing a while ago so I have no advice on that, but I assume you are also giving water in a sippy to help with hydration.
I would get to the pedi ASAP to check weight and see what they think about one wet diaper per day. I would not be surprised if they wanted to check kidney function.
DS has done this each time he's teething. He has 8 teeth and currently has 4 molars and 1 eye tooth coming. His intake of breastmilk and solids drops drastically for about a week. Sometimes he freaks out when I try to put him in his highchair because he doesn't want to eat, so I don't force the solids on him.
The best thing I've found is dream feeding him. I go in his room about an hour or 2 after he's asleep, make sure my boob is hanging out and ready to go, then lift him out of the crib and he latches on right away. I rock and feed him til he pulls off about 20-30 minutes later. I put him back in the crib and he never wakes up. Usually one dream feed is enough, but sometimes I'll do another in the middle of the night.
I agree it's likely teething related. Most babies don't self wean until around 18 months.
As baby gets older it's much harder to increase supply, it's so driven by baby's demand that herbal supplements and upping water and pumping may not help. It's a natural evolutionary thing and is well documented. Many women cannot increase supply after 6 months and most get a dip around 9. I guess it's to return to fertility as well as to increase the child's consumption of solids.
I would monitor diapers and give a bottle of formula if you are really worried.
ETA: I do 1-2 formula bottles a day now. J is the most distracted nurser and with her being smaller I don't want to chance a weight issue. I think if you can BF some that's better than none.
Francesca Pearl is here! Josephine Hope is almost 3!
I also agree that babies don't self-wean at this age, so it is likely due to teething. I had the same symptoms in baby and me when L was 6 months, and it was a supply issue created by his first teeth coming in. He lost 1lb in his sixth month and had very reduced numbers of wet diapers. The herbal stuff and pumping after nursing didn't help, so I demanded my pediatrician refer us to a lactation consultant. She ended up prescribing us Domperidone because nothing else was working, and she checked out our latch and everything was good; the milk was just not there.
The Dom is working great since then, I have more milk than I ever have, which makes me so happy that I am finally able to build a freezer stash for when L goes to daycare in a few months.
Honestly I would be supplementing after each feeding if he's only having 1 wet diaper a day. That's not okay.
