We go all out for the 1st birthday, starting w/ the 2nd it's just close family and a few friends. For DS's 2nd we actually wound up w/ 2 parties because my family couldn't make the day we chose. We did little ceasars pizza, salad, pretzels, chips and dip. Pop and a Sesame Street Cake. There were about 11-13 people. I don't even think we did decorations IIR. His second party was just dinner, cake and presents w/ about 8-10 people.
For DS' first we went BIG with just over 100 people, still at our house for food we did deli meat and cheese platters, fresh rolls, and different salads.
For DS' 2nd we had about 50 people, mostly friends and family. WE did a cowboy theme (pics in blog, link in siggy) and had food to match. It was all heat and serve and ready made salads and it was great. The time was 4-7, which was great because I had all day to prep, we served dinner and he still had his regular nap.
Last week we went to a smaller and great party for a 2 year old. It was just friends with LOs and it was a water party, small kiddie pools, water tables and a little sprinkler/splash pad. The kids LOVED it. THe parents sat and chated and supervised. THen there was pizza, cake and presents. It was 3-5pm, short and sweet and perfect for 2 year olds.

Both his 1st and 2nd were small and we invited only family (he was the only kid). For his 2nd, it was cake, ice cream and some of his favorite finger foods (pizza, cheese/crackers, hummus, veggies, chips, etc).
We decided that we will have bigger ones with his friends when he is old enough to tell us who he wants at his party. Until then, it's been nice and stress-free having it for 8 people.
For DD's 1st birthday, we had about 40 people (friends and family). For her 2nd last week, we just had family - 8 adults and DD. We had the party after DD's nap. It was a low key early dinner, presents and a Minnie Mouse cake (I bought just a few decorations at Party City). We decided after her 1st to just have family until DD has kid parties.

My sons party is next weekend. 16 ppl at a park, including us...just grandparents, SILs fam, and one neighborhood fam. I would have like a few more kids (5 kids ages 2-5, plus a baby and a 10 yr old...4 other families couldn't make it though), just because I overplanned activities...playground, water balloons and water guns, a pinata, and a visit from an elmo impersonator. Food is sandwiches, fruit tray, chips, and cookie cake and drinks. Add in decorations, plates, napkins, balloons, goody bags...our little park party will end up almost $400... but o well. Next year we will have to scale back since there will be 2 parties to plan, so we can splurge a little I guess. We also kind of skimped on his gift because of it and just got him a $50 train set...but that's included in the above cost

My DD's 2nd birthday party was yesterday. We had a small family bbq. There was 8 adults and 4 kids (including me, my DH and DD). A few kids made it fun for my DD and not too many people made it stress-free (almost) for me. It was from 4 to 6ish (after nap before bedtime).
For DS's 2nd we had a BBQ in the backyard - pretty low key. We had it at lunchtime on a Saturday with chicken, sausages, hot dogs, and hamburgers. We didn't really need to make any of the sides as lots of people in the family asked to contribute which was great. We probably had maybe 30 people or so, mostly family but also a couple of our friends that have small children. I made a construction theme cake and we had Elmo balloons so I can't really say the party had an overall theme. We had beer, wine, and soda for the adults and flavored water and lemonade for the kids. We rented a couple of tables with tableclothes and some chairs as we don't have much in terms of lawn furniture. I did put favor bags together for the kids which I didn't bother with last year. DS seemed to enjoy handing them out at the end of the party.
We do kid bdays with playgroup. We keep them pretty simple. If it's your kid's bday- you host, provide some snacks and cake. We keep our 10am/Tuesday playgroup time. These are low-key but fun.
We did a family bday party around 4pm on a Saturday- cocktails, appetizers and cake. We did have a subtle Mickey Mouse clubhouse theme (cake, tablecoth/plates/napkins). We probably had 25 or so people.
I can't really imagine inviting my adult friends to a kids birthday party. For DD's 2nd, we invited all her daycare friends and some neighborhood friends and our immediate families. I think we had ~ 12 little kids, our nieces and nephew (who are all 8-11) grandparents and our siblilings and spouses. So. .. total 30ish people. It was fun - we did a Ladybug theme - but nothing complicated, I just got stuff from the local party store. The party was around 10 am on a Saturday - so prime play time for LOs and we did lunch - Chik Fila tray, some sandwiches, cheese & crackers, cake and cookies. It was fun and pretty simple.

Here's a recap I did on my blog: https://www.nannersp.com/2010/10/hoot-hoot.html
In a nutshell, it was from 3-6 p.m., sweets & snacks, mainly families but a few of our adult friends, too.
