Wakes up screaming

My DS will be sound alseep and will wake up with this squel/scream that scares me and is just horrible. It takes him a few minutes to settle down and I feel helpless to try and comfort him and make him feel safe. Does this happen to anyone else? Is he having bad dreams? What could he be dreaming about? TIA

Re: Wakes up screaming

  • I had to google this because I thought DS was having nightmares. Apparently that's not possible at this stage though. I read that often they will cry in their sleep when they are in between sleep cycles. Is he actually waking up with his eyes open or do you wake him up soothing him? I thought DS was waking up until I realized that he was still actually asleep when he was shrieking and I was waking him up. The past couple days if his eyes are still closed I rub his stomach and his forehead or put my hand on his face and eventually he just stops like a switch turned off and goes back to sleeping like it never happened. If he is awake though that obviously isn't the case. He could be crying during sleep cycles though and waking himself up all of the way.

  • Sometimes DS will do that when we're napping together. I usually have to walk around the room with him for a few minutes before he settles down.

  • Ya know maybe he isnt awake all the way...I am probably waking him up now that I think about it. It is usually really easy to get him back to sleep so maybe so. This only happens during naps, not at all at night (so far). Tonight my DH was just putting his paci back in his mouth and that seemed to calm him down and he would settle down. I hope this doesnt last too long!

  • Yes, DS does this. The first few times, I went running in there and he was sound asleep. Now when he does it, I just check him on the monitor and make sure he is okay. If I go in there and he hears me he wakes up more. If I leave him alone he goes right back to sleep. His was more like a shriek he let out in the middle of sleeping.

  • DS does this probably 2-3 times during a 2 hour nap. At first I used to go running to him, but like most people have said it just woke him up. Now I just listen, make sure he's ok but I don't go to him - smelling/hearing me wakes him all they way up.
