I don't really keep count. I figure it's around 30+ words at this point. Just in the past couple of days he has added milk, house, up, down, eat, car, and cow (although those last two sound the same but the context is different).
mom, dad, all done, dog, uh oh, ball, hi (sounds more like ha), byebye, duck, car, up, that, Zach. He can say nana and yiayia (greek for grandma) but only when looking at pictures of them, lol.
DD can repeat pretty much any 1-3 syllable word, so I don't count it if she just repeats. If I count word she uses on her own, unprompted, probably 250-300.
I started counting words when they used it spontaneously in context (and more than once so it wasn't just coincidence); I never counted just repetition so I'm not sure about that. But they both started talking a week before they hit 15m. They each had about 50 words by 18m, 200 words by 21m, and 400-500 words by the time they turned 2. Since then, I'm really not sure.
Sometimes, if i listen really hard I hear "all done" and "whats that" , but it is very in-frequent and you have to listen for it.
He does make lots of sounds and does have ways to communicate, he just hasn't hasn't figured out how to put them into words yet.
I am not really worried about it because he is definitely focusing on gross motor skills. He can do things that are supposed to be milestones for 18 month olds.
If however, he doesn't gain 1 or 2 more words by the time he has his 15 month appointment, I will mention it to pedi just in case.
At 20 months, probably close to 100 +. She's also started to speak in short sentences i.e. "More please Mommy," "Wake up Tatee" (Tatee=Cate, her older sister), "All done pasta"...things like that.
We started a list before DS's 18 month well check up because they have asked for several visits how many words he is saying (along with several other questions based on his development). We've just kept track of it since to keep for his baby book.
He's up to around 125 now at 20 1/2 months. He says several 2-3 words sentences too. Right around 18 months he started the so-called "word explosion" and learns new words left and right. It's pretty amazing to watch!

We also just did a count of words she uses, and it's just topped 100. It happened really quickly, though- she would start picking up several new words a day- and retain them.
DH is also well over 200 words now. He hit his first word explosion at about 15 months, then hit another one within the last month or so. He can now say a couple of spontaneous 5-word sentences ("I see a big truck!"), but most of his communication is 2-3 word sentences. He will attempt to repeat any word we say. He can count to 20 and also sing songs. Gross motor and language are Curly's two areas of strength... we're still working on other things, like attention span and fine motor skills. I really believe a child will excel in one or two areas for a while, then will catch up in the other areas later.
Don't be in too much of a hurry for your LO to grow up. It'll happen before you know it, and you'll be regretting the things you catch yourself saying! For example, Curly will now run around the house yelling "CWAP!!" over and over again. I long for the simpler days when I was excited that he could say Mama! ;-)

Re: How many words does your LO know?
Let me count...
dada, baby, happy, bye, up, please, dog...and I think a few more?
So about 7-10 words at 15 months.
mom, dad, all done, dog, uh oh, ball, hi (sounds more like ha), byebye, duck, car, up, that, Zach. He can say nana and yiayia (greek for grandma) but only when looking at pictures of them, lol.
And probably 10 animal noises.
DD says quite a few. In the last 2 weeks she has really started to pick up on words and is using them more often.
Daddy, mom, shoes, hi, hello, bye bye, Spongebob, Brutus, Pinky, no, uh oh, yes, thanks, papa, gross, juice, milk, stop and stop barking, night night, boo, baby, dog, duck, fish and bird.
my read shelf:
Consistent basis?
Cat. Bye bye.
So 2. He has said other things but not consistently (he'll say it for a day then never again type of thing).
ETA: I forgot about ball. So make that 3 words. He does not have any noises (like animals or vehicles) yet.
2. "mamma" and "dadda".
Sometimes, if i listen really hard I hear "all done" and "whats that" , but it is very in-frequent and you have to listen for it.

A kiss he will never forget- Disney World 2014
He knows about 10 words.
Mama, daddy (doesn't say this often), Lola, ball, boob (boop),hat, dog, cat, boot, bird.
I think he said go a few times today when trying to push the riding toy he's outgrown, but I'm not really sure.
I only count words he says in context. He doesn't repeat words we say yet anyway, at least not right afterward.

Let's see I'd guess somewhere between 15-25. The one's I can think of right now are:
Mama, Dada, Lola (prounounced "ya ya"), Josie, dog, baba, juice, ball, shoes, upstairs, water, papa, and banana
He also says "what's this" or "what's that" very often when asking what things are.
