Cloth Diapering

Day 2 of CDing - need help!

I have GMD red PFs with snappi and a trial from Jillian's. Everything is prepped. No problems there.

My real issue is with fit. DS is 15.5 lbs. The PFs seem sooo bulky and I can barely get the Thirsties cover (supposed to be up to 18lb I think) over them. I tried using the flip over them too, without the insert of course. I can barely bend him to sit. How can this be comfortable at all?

Some of the diapers are so big and thick that I feel like they can't be comfortable and don;t give him any room to move or sit. Is this just the nature of these dipes?

Other ones that say they're good till 18lbs just seem to barely cover him in the rise. He's not a tall baby by any means, short and chunky, but maybe I'm just used to how my sposies fit?

There are a couple that seem nice - the FB Perfect Size and the Thirsties Fab Fitted (though the matching size cover barely covers it...).

Also, he always feels pretty damp on his skin when I take the PFs off.

Someone please talk to me about this because I'm feeling pretty discouraged.

Re: Day 2 of CDing - need help!

  • If you have a bulky diaper under a cover, you may need to size up for the cover. FWIW, J. is 22 lbs and we use the yellow edge GMD PFs. We just trifold them in the cover and go. If I think he's going to poop, I will spread the back corners of the PF out.

    I haven't used a snappi in months.

Yes, his skin will feel damp if you aren't using a stay-dry lining (like a fleece liner). I just give J. a minute to air out. He doesn't seem to be bothered by the wetness. You could also try changing LO more often.

I have a similar bulkiness with the BG, Flip and FB OS. It just seems like he can barely wiggle in these. Does he just need some time to grow into these?

  • Which Thirsties cover is it?  The Duo Size 1?  We outgrew those WAY before we hit the wt max listed.  Those are kind of guidelines, so don't take them to seriously.  Usually if we're within a few pounds of the max, I always size up....especially since DS is tall and we often need the extra rise.

As for the staydry feel, you won't get that with prefolds.  Does it seem to bother your son?  You could always use fleece liner to wick away the moisture.

I'd say probably. (We don't use OS diapers so take this with a grain of salt.) But from what I've read here, OS diapers often don't fit until about 12 lbs. And since they are designed to last for a wide range of weight, they will be bulky when your LO is still small.

The Flip with a staydry insert is probably the trimmest CD we use....so if you still think that's too bulky, you may just need to get used to it.  Cloth won't be as trim as a sposie.  I never noticed the fluffy bum hindering his movement, and he hit all his milestones right on track.

    Yep, Duo size 1.

Agree. My SIL commented on Owen's big diapers over the weekend - she's just used to how disposables fit. Owen wiggles all over the place and really doesn't seem to mind. Cloth is just bigger. You get used to it.

Prefolds leave the wet on the skin. We use mostly pockets, which have a fleece layer that does more to keep his skin dryer. I only used prefolds for the newborn phase. I didn't like them that much, so I never bought a larger size.

It's probably too small.  The Flip however should work.  Is there maybe a different fold you could try to reduce some of the bulk?  Or maybe just trifold it in the cover.

Yeah, I'd also say try a stay dry insert with your Flips.  They fit well and wick away more moisture than a prefold.  I've gravitated toward BG 4.0's just because of that nice fleece layer the keeps LO's skin pretty dry.  I love their fit and we never have leaks.  I personally am not a fan of prefolds, and it could be their not the right thing for you either.  Definitely play around with different options - don't give up yet!  The good thing about the prefolds you're using are that a lot of people do like them so you should be able to sell them easily if you end up not using them.

The flip covers it fine, the PFs are just big. Trifolding works fine but doesn't keep the poop from getting on the cover and I'm trying to reuse my two PUL covers without washing since I don't have a large stash yet.

Thank you ladies. Just talking about it gives me some extra motivation.

Good luck with that. DS was an explosive pooper and we were not able to reuse the covers (for PFs or AI2s) until recently when his BMs got a bit more solid.

  • A fold that always worked for us was called a bikini twist. lay the diaper out, put baby on diaper, take front corners in each hand and switch hands making a twist in the diaper. I always tried to configure the twist so it was more in front than in between his legs since it provided a thicker area for him to wet through and then folded down the front to put the cover on. It always kept in the poop and always seemed like a trimmer fold. We love the Fuzzi Bunz sized diapers for trimness.

Cloth is just bulkier, it never seemed to bother my kids. Girls crawled at 6 months, DS at 7 1/2 -  girls walked at 10 months, DS at 11 1/2.

  • My son is about the same size as yours and we have simliar feelings about the OS pocket dipes.  I love them (esp our BGs) and they fit nicely, but they are bulky.

We switched back to the newborn insert, rather than the OS insert, and that has helped.  I had it in my head that since he's not a newborn, we should use the OS, but unless he's soaking it to the point of leaking, we'll stick with the NB insert.
