What was the stupidest thing someone has told you about your baby.

Mine was, the cat will be jealous and smother my baby in its sleep

If the house ain't burned down and the baby's fed it was a successful day. Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

Re: What was the stupidest thing someone has told you about your baby.

  • A few weeks ago my MIL said that her size 2 diapers were too tight if we pulled the tabs to the middle and it was constricting her stomach and not letting the gas pass, She's 12 pounds and size 2 is almost too big on her. She usually wears 1-2s but we ran out and had to pick up a pack and they didn't have 1-2s.

    My baby farts just fine.

  • Ok it was a question from a woman applying to be my son's nanny.  She asked if he was a good baby.  He is 11 months old, how can he be bad???  I think that she meant to ask if he was fussy etc. All babies are good whether they are fussy or not.

  • My mil told me that we needed to take our dd out more to expose her to all the germs.  This after spending 16 days in the NICU due to being premature.

  • Our friend's not too bright GF told me that I had to be careful with DS around the dog. Here's the reason...

When I was at the end of term I had a lot of excess discharge and was wearing lots of liners. Our dog would get them out of the bathroom trash and eat them. I told friend's GF this. She replied something along the lines of "oh, yeah with the placenta on them. You'll have to be careful when the baby is born then because the dog will smell the placenta and try to get him too.".........

    I couldn't even respond.

  • My LO has a very slight umbilical hernia. The pedi said its not bad at all and it will be fine by itself. My MIL said that when she was younger 'they' would put a penny in a little bag and tie it around the baby's belly with ribbon to make the belly button go in!!  Talk about weird old wives tails!!!! There will be no pennies going near my sons belly!

  • Mine wasn't that bad, compared to some of the other responses.

I was told to put olive oil into his hair every night to "train it to lie flat". First of all, when it's clean it pretty much lies flat on its own. Second of all, why would I try to make it do something now when I have absolutely no way of knowing what it's going to turn out like? It'll probably fall out or grow longer, the cowlick (which is really cute, BTW) may move around, etc.

I've also been told not to let him fall asleep in my arms or he'll never be able to sleep in his bed. Ok, maybe this one has a tiny speck of habit-forming truth to it, but I don't care. I want to hold my baby while he's still a baby. And I have yet to see a teenager who needs his mother's arms to fall asleep in. So NEVER seems a bit extreme.

It's not an old wives TALE, it's an old trick. It does help keep the belly button from poking out.

  • When I was still PG someone on the bump told another bumpie (seriously) not to raise her hands over her head or the umbilical cord would strangle LO>

My MIL told me not to support LO under his arms and let him stand and 'walk' towards me because his bones are too soft and it would do permanent damage.

This is very common on here but doesn't make it any less stupid- my mom trying to get LO on pablum/rice cereal or start solids at like 2 mos (or even earlier).

My SIL telling me when I was pg that I shouldn't eat any sushi- even vegetarian because the seaweed was dangerous for LO.

My mom being upset that she couldn't use her jogging stroller with LO when he was only a week old (he needs to be in the carseat attached to my stroller which I gladly offered to lend- she just wanted to use hers).

Oh yes, the absolute stupidest would be my mom offering to buy formula for LO if we couldn't afford it, so I wouldn't have to worry about sending BM and picking the best way to do so (send frozen, send fridge-stash, how much etc).

eta- one more stupid thing. My DR, a medically-trained DR telling me that I should 'aim' to have LO poop once a day. How do you make a goal for how often your baby poops? Do I give him gold stars or something? Also he had a fever and wet cough from the air conditioning that has been on since the day he was born.

  • Let's see, this week my MIL told me:

Don't let the baby put weight on his legs. It will make him bowlegged.

He's hungry and some women make plenty of milk but it doesn't have enough nutrition to feed a baby (???)

He's drooling because he has a sore throat because you keep the house too cold.

I know there was a lot more, but I just can't think of them at the moment.

  • When V started mildly fussing at the ILs' house this weekend, MIL asked, "What, is she sick or something?"  If I were a nervous FTM, she could've really freaked me out!  But no, MIL, my baby is not sick, unless you mean that she's sick of you over-stimulating her.
