Rolling Over and Waking Up

Lucy started rolling from her back to her stomach which we are really excited about.  Except...now she keeps rolling onto her stomach around 3 or 4 a.m. which wakes her up.  Since it is so close to her normal wakeup time (6 a.m.) we are having trouble getting her back to sleep.  I also had a lot of trouble getting her to nap this weekend because of the same issue.  Just wondering if anyone has experienced this and if there was anything we could to do to prevent it?  Or, maybe it is just a phase that will pass (hopefully quickly...fingers crossed)?

  • Emilie has done the same thing. I don't think there is anything we really can do unfortunately. I just go into her room, gently roll her back, give her her paci back, and then leave and cross my fingers she goes back to sleep.

  • Mine is the opposite.  Ethan rolls from his belly to his back in the middle of the night and that wakes him up.  I give him his paci and calm him down, he usually goes back to sleep.  Sometimes I have to feed him before he goes back to sleep, but usually only once.

Yeah, ditto. If your DD has eliminated her overnight feedings, don't feed her when she wakes herself up unless you really need to. I usually do the same as penguin - roll her back, paci, a little shushing, then leave - and she goes back to sleep within a few minutes.

And there is hope that it's just a phase, too! C has started to fall asleep on her tummy when she rolls, so the number of times I'm getting up to flip her back are slowly lessening. Yay!

Pretty much this. Except now DD likes sleeping on her stomach, which makes me a nervous wreck.

  • DD started doing this around 12 weeks. She would use her legs to tip over and then straighten them to flop to her tuimmy. It really stressed me out - especially because the first few times she was swaddled! We had to break the swaddle and get used to the tummy thing.

I would watch the monitor a lot. She would fuss a bit and then get comfortable and sleep great. I only rolled her a few times. Now she goes back and forth all night and doesn't cry out most of the time. Good luck

  • We had the same issue a few weeks ago when DD started rolling from back to belly.  The first couple of nights she did it she would get mad and cry and we'd have to roll her back, paci and shush her, then after a few nights I woke up and she was asleep on her belly (which def took some getting used on our part, pretty sure me or my hubby check her 3-4x a night!) but at least she has learned to put herself back to sleep after rolling ;)  Hang in there, I would expect it will pass fairly quickly, although expect that you may end up with a belly sleeper!
