How old was your LO when you....

Felt like you could bring him/her anywhere?  I've been very cautious about where I bring baby, I'm just of the opinion that a NB has no place out and about (I said in my opinion don't flame me) but now that DS is three months I feel more comfortable bringing him places, so far we've only been to other people's homes a few times to the mall/stores and his pedi's but that's it. I haven't been to church with him, how old was your LO when you went to church? Also, I'd like to go to a family event held at an outdoor pool next friday, is it OK to bring baby into the water? I'm concern because of chlorine and the sun since supposedly no sunblock until 6 month of age. TIA!

Re: How old was your LO when you....

  • I've always taken DD where ever I go, but that is mostly because of my 2 year old.

As for the pool-I think in moderation it is fine, and as long as it doesn't bother your lo's skin! The rule about sun screen isn't because it will hurt them, it's mostly because they shouldn't be in the sun long enough to need it. I think it's fine to put on for some short time in the sun.

  • I'd put sunblock on them.  And I take her pretty much wherever I want to go, but just keep in mind her moods when I do it.

Me too. There is a sunscreen thread - https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/35113032.aspx  that gives you the guidelines on the better choices for suncreen/block. I followed the recommendations on what to buy and used it. It's better to be sun safe than sunburnt, IMO.

  • She was a week old when we went to church. We take her everywhere. I can't imagine putting my life on hold like that. That's what it would feel like to me anyway. LO was two months when she went into a pool. She loved it. It probably would have been sooner but we didn't get an opportunity.

  • In the last two months we go anywhere(not outside a bunch since it's 103-108 on average here) but she has been to church, dinners, friends houses, outdoor parties when we were in NY...etc.

I asked my derm about sunscreen for babies (when I was getting my stuipd cancer removed) and she said sunscreen is okay at any age. Obviously I would use a sensitve one of an infant sunscreen, but I lathered K up when she's been in the pool. I just make sure I bathe her really well that night.

As for the pool, for the first hour(it was 100% shaded by a canvas tent) she didn't want more than her feet in. Then she got used to it and hung out in a float for about 45 minutes.

I say jump in feet first. You'll be surprised how well LO's do!

  • The only reason I haven't taken LO everywhere I needed to go since she was born was because I thought she'd cry and be disruptive (like my massage or a long doctor's appointment).  If it was fall/winter and flu season, I might have felt differently about being out with people, but I need to get things done and need to be out of the house for my own sanity.

  • DS went to Target on day 3, church on day 4. We have never not gone anywhere because of DS, our lives have not changed much from what it was like before he joined us.

  • I did a 2 week nesting time where I didn't go anywhere, my midwife even came to my house for appointments.  After that we were out somewhere every day.  My older daughter couldn't just hang around the house, she would have driven me crazy.  At one month we flew to my brother's wedding.  We were actually going to drive up until the last minute, but decided it would be way easier to fly, and I'm sooo glad we made that decision.

I haven't used sunblock on K yet, and I'm glad because I think she's sensitive to the lavender in the one I have for A.  We found this out by her screaming every time I put some on me.  I'm all for the UV resistant sunsuits and a good hat.  That's what we use most of the time around here.

  • I've taken him wherever I've needed since he was just a couple days old (before that I didn't leave the house because of the pain I was in). He's been in two pools and in lake huron. I've read the chemicals in sunscreen are not good for babies under 6 months but sunblock "(like zinc) is okay. I couldn't find zinc so I just bought some extra-strength zinc-based diaper cream and put it all over him.

eta:If we had been ffing  I might have waited longer but I think being stuck in the house 24/7 (I am a crappy pumper so I would have been) would have let OOD set in.

  • 2 days after birth we took her to the pedi. And I think in her first week or 2 I had to take her to the grocery store. My DH is military, we live far away from family and friends. I can't sit inside my house with the baby 24/7 365. She has to go where I go and I have errands to run. I have taken M to the pool, at 2 months, no sunblock. She was exposed to the sun for like 10 minutes. Women used to work in the fields with their newborns strapped to their backs. I doubt that an outing or two is gonna harm her.

  • DD has been out and about since she was 4 days old. Heck, she went on the Hershey's tour at 5 days. She's been to the stores, the beach, the beach again in two weeks, in a pool, flea markets, fireworks (at a distance of course), out to plenty of restaurants, and went to her first baseball last night. We're not homebodies and will not put our lives on hold. We have not, however, taken her on our friends boat, to any concerts, and obviously not to a bar. I will say, in regards to the pool, she had a rash guard on, a sun hat, and I had a large floppy sun hat. She did wear sunblock, but we checked with our ped first. She said to make sure it's sunBLOCK, not sunSCREEN. They recommended Neutrogena and Aveeno. We use Neutrogena and have had no problems. I just make sure she gets a bath as soon as she's out of the sun/pool.

  • There isn't really anywhere I wouldn't take DD, that I would take DS (who is 18 months).  With that said, I wouldn't go to like a fancy restaurant or something, LOL!

As for a pool, I've taken DD in, but she hates it.  Even heated pools when it's super hot out!  She usually just lets me put the tips of her toes in, but once she gets more in she screams.  (she hates being the least bit cold, I've never seen a baby shiver so much).  But every baby's different and maybe yours would like the pool water.  Just wear a hat and try to stay out of the sun as much as possible.

  • I started taking DS everywhere at 4 weeks.   We moved to a different province at that time. I no longer had any friends or family to help out and I had a bunch of stuff to do so I had no choice but to take him everywhere with me.

Prior to 4 weeks, the only reason I didn't take him out more was because I had no idea how he would react or I worried that I wouldn't be able to calm him down if he started fussing and I still needed to get better at breastfeeding enough that I would be comfortable with NIP.   We still went places, but we were only out for a maximum of 2 hours at a time.

I haven't taken him to a pool, so I have no advice on that.

  • I took DS to the pool when he was just shy of 2 months. It was evening and no direct sun, so no sunscreen and we were only there for 15 minutes. Before the second time we took him I asked the pedi about the sunscreen we were using (California Baby) and he said it was ok.

Now I'm at the point where I feel I can take him anywhere. I wear him in a sling because I love it and so does DS, but it's nice too in that it slightly discourages people from touching him. He's also almost at everyone's level, so he's interacting with people and seeing everything.

Just this past week he's been getting really bored at home. I'm taking him on more walks and out to stores and he's happy as a clam just seeing new things.

  • We have taken DS just about everywhere with us since he was a few days old. We did have some visitors the first week so we were able to run out to the store a couple times without him, but for the most part, we're alone here (family wise). So we don't really have a choice-we had to just jump right in and start taking him places and see how he handled it. Honestly, he does GREAT. My mom and grandma have said we are very lucky to have such an easy going little guy. We can go to lunch and take him to the mall and everything and he doesn't mind one bit. I just make sure I have enough bottles for him and enough diapers and he's a happy camper. I think you just have to go for it!
  • We have taken our lo everywhere since week one, but we also have a 6 year old who can not be stuck at home all summer!

For the pool i would pick up a floatie that lo can sit in and has a shade. ive seen them at walmart and target.

  • A week, with both kids.

And my DD hasn't been in the pool yet and we belong to one and are there often. I just don't see the need this young. Especially because it's COLD :)

  • We have been bringing the baby everywhere since getting discharged from the hospital. We don't attend church, but we took DD with us to a church wedding at four weeks old. We haven't put baby in a pool yet but her pedi gave us the okay provided she is in some kind of shade.

DH and I are the crazy parents who took their two month old on a road trip from California to Oklahoma for a car show. We want to make sure that we include DD in our hobbies and get her used to being around lots of people.
